12 Home Remedies For Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a lung infection caused due to bacteria, viruses or through funguses. It may occur for few days to few weeks and get cleared away or it may also prove be a serious and a fatal one. It may be a cause for anxiety if it attacks infants, children and senior citizens or to a week person of low immunity. Common symptoms of pneumonia are cough, fever, shivering and breathlessness; some other symptoms of pneumonia may include headache, fatigue and sweating, nausea and vomiting, muscle and chest ache etc. Proper treatment of this disease depends upon the type and severity of the symptoms. Doctors should be consulted in the case of breathing problem, chest ache, persistent high fever and cough. In all other cases few home remedies can be tried to get some relief from the disease and strengthen the immunity system of the body to fight it out.

Here Are 12 Home Remedies For Pneumonia

1. Homemade Cough Syrup

Ingredients for the home made syrup are 1 teaspoon of dried mullein leaves; chopped ginger; dried rosemary leaves; dried horehound herb; cinnamon; 120 ml. of honey and water. All ingredients are to be poured into a pot and boiled. The heating is reduced before it is removed and cooled for few minutes. One teaspoon of the syrup prepared is consumed every 2 hours till one gets relief. The remaining portion is to be stored in airtight container and kept in the refrigerator. The prepared syrup will help in breaking up mucus and relieve the lungs.

2. Vegetable Soups

Fresh juice from carrots, spinach, beet and cucumber are good for the health especially during pneumonia. They help in reviving the immunity system, diluting mucus and detoxification. Parsnip juice being rich in phosphorous and chlorine is beneficial for the respiratory system [1].

3. Garlic

It is a well-known fact that garlic fights off bacteria, viruses and fungi by its antimicrobial properties. It also helps to reduce body temperatures and clears the chests and the lungs [2].

4. Simple Steam Inhalation

Steam inhalation is considered beneficial for relieving cough and congestion. Likewise taking a hot shower is also beneficial for a person suffering from pneumonia.

5. Tea tree And Eucalyptus Oil Steaming

This method may be applied by adding any of the two ingredients. Both of them are antibacterial and help in killing the pneumonia germs. Eucalyptus oil helps to clear the lungs by breaking and diluting mucus. It can be used as a regular steam inhalation with added eucalyptus oil or tea tree into the steaming water and inhaled.

6. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper having high in capsaicin content helps in the removal of mucus from respiratory passages. It also helps in the development of mucus membrane [3].

7. Sesame Seeds

This home remedy helps in the removal of phlegm from the respiratory system. Sesame seeds are natural expectorants. It may be consumed by adding to a cup of boiling water with flax seeds. The ingredient is left for 10 minutes after removing from heat with honey and a pinch of salt added to it later on. It is consumed daily to get rid of pneumonia [4].

8. Fenugreek Seeds

It helps in breaking up congestion. It also helps by inducing sweating and thereby reducing fever and removal of toxins from the body [5].

9. Turmeric

This medicinal herb helps in the removal of mucus from the respiratory tracks. Being antiviral and antibacterial in nature it helps to fight infection. It can be used in various ways. It may be mixed with warm mustard oil and massaged onto the chest and leave it like that for few minutes and finally rinse off with water. The process can be repeated for few days. It may be consumed with warm milk thrice a day [6].

10. Holy Basil And Black Pepper

Both holy basil and black peeper are considered beneficial for our lungs and are useful in the natural solution of pneumonia. They can be used with other diets or can be consumed separately [7].

11. Turpentine Oil

Turpentine oil helps in relieving pain that is associated with pneumonia. It eases breathing and relives chest pain. It may be mixed with camphor and massaged on the chest for few minutes. The chest is then covered with warm cotton cloth and left in position for an hour. The process is repeated daily [8].

12. Oregano Oil

Being antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal in nature, oregano oil combats with the pneumonia germs. It also helps in diluting mucus and thereby clearing congestion. It may be mixed with glass of water and consumed or it may be inhaled throughout the night by adding 2 drops on a cotton ball and kept under the pillow. The process may be continued to get relief from pneumonia [9].
