Signs of Autism in Toddlers

Autism usually develops under the age of one, but in some cases, the child may not have symptoms until the age of four. Knowing what the signs of autism is in toddlers could help minimize the symptoms. Also, diagnosing the problem will bring you one step closer to getting treatment.

Autism signs in toddlers differ from the autism signs in infants. Toddlers that suffer from autism do not react like normal toddlers do. Normally, when you call the child they will acknowledge you by turning their head. A child with autism will not make any acknowledgment. Another autism sign in toddlers is lack of affection. Children with autism are sensitive to touch and do not like to cuddle or hug. Not following gestures is another sign of autism in toddlers. They will not understand if you point at something and therefore they will not look towards it. They may also not respond to waving and not understand that it means hello or goodbye. Being a “loner” is another sign. Toddlers are usually very friendly and enjoy playing with other kids. If the child has autism, they will keep to themselves and try to avoid any social interaction.

Lack of facial movements and expression is another sign of autism in toddlers. When a baby doesn’t make facial expressions we tend to overlook it. However, once they hit a certain age they should be very expressive with their face. If the child is autistic they will not. An autistic child will in many cases have a glazed over look and almost seem as if they are day dreaming. If the child does not smile, or make any hand gestures, it could be a sign as well. The child may also lack emotional skills and intellect. Overall, an autism sign in toddlers is lack of social, communication and emotional skills. The child may only have one of these symptoms, or they may have multiple. Knowing what to look for will help you diagnose the toddler early and seek treatment that can be helpful in your child’s development and social ability.
