Garlic syrup is a traditional remedy for chest infection. The antibiotic property of garlic helps in killing the germs that infect the respiratory tract. It helps strengthen the immune system, thereby providing fast relief from cold, cough and respiratory infections. Garlic syrup works for both acute as well as chronic infections. This natural remedy is free from side effects. Therefore, it can be taken for prolonged period to diminish risk of recurrent infections that lead to respiratory distress. In addition to garlic, the syrup contains other ingredients that are readily available in the kitchen.
Garlic syrup is traditionally made by combining garlic with apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar is known to help in detoxification. This property of apple cider vinegar seems to help in maintaining the health and function of the immune system.
One head of garlic
½ cup unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
½ cup distilled water
¼ cup vegetable glycerin or honey
Peel the garlic cloves and crush them. Mix the apple cider vinegar with water. In a glass jar, place the crushed garlic cloves and pour the diluted vinegar. Cover the jar and keep it aside for four hours. Strain the liquid and add the glycerin or honey. Stir and store the garlic syrup in the refrigerator. Take a tablespoon of garlic syrup diluted with a cup of water three times a day.
Apart from adding sweetness to the garlic syrup recipe, honey boosts its health benefits. Honey is a natural antibiotic. It helps soothe the sore throat and reduces coughing triggered by lung infection.
Twelve garlic cloves
¾ cup honey
Three tablespoons of brandy
One tablespoon of lemon juice
Peel the garlic cloves and lightly crush them. Put the crushed garlic cloves and honey in a small pan and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the fire and add the brandy and lemon juice and mix well. After the mixture cools to room temperature strain and store the syrup in a jar.
Horseradish is a natural antibiotic. Garlic syrup that contains horseradish as an ingredient is a powerful remedy for lung infections.
One tablespoon of very finely chopped garlic
One teaspoon very finely grated horseradish
125 ml honey
Put all the ingredients in a jar. Place the jar on a pan of hot water. Leave the jar aside for a day. Strain and store the syrup in a dry jar. Take one to two teaspoons of the syrup.
Ginger helps in breaking down the mucus so that it can be easily expelled from the lungs. The anti-inflammatory property of ginger helps in reducing inflammation of the airways and eases breathing.

Raw sugar or honey
Place the garlic and ginger in a clean glass jar and cover with sugar or honey. Keep the jar aside in a dark cool location for 3 to 7 days. Shake the jar once or twice daily. Strain the syrup and keep it in the refrigerator.
Fennel is known to reduce spasms in the respiratory system and caraway helps in expelling mucus from the lungs. They can be added to garlic syrup to boost its effectiveness.
One pound fresh garlic bulb
½ oz fennel seeds
½ oz caraway seeds
1 quart water
Vinegar
Sugar
Crush the fennel and caraway seeds. Slice the garlic cloves and boil them until soft. Add the crushed seeds. Cover the container and keep it in a dark location for 12 hours. Strain the liquid and mix in equal quantity of vinegar. Bring the mixture to a boil and add sugar to attain syrupy consistency.
