6 Natural Cures For Frost Bite

Frostbite is the localised damage caused to skin and tissues due to prolonged exposure to extreme cold. The freezing temperature causes the skin tissue to freeze and block the blood circulation in that body part, sometimes causing permanent damage and amputation.  It mostly inflicts the extremities. It is usually found to occur in mountain climbers and people living in very cold areas that receive heavy snowfall.

People suffering from diabetes, peripheral vascular disease and heavy smokers. In this feature, we would be introducing you to numerous natural cures for frost bite. However, do note that none of these cures substitute or dispense off with a medical consultation.

Natural Cures For Frost bite

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera gel is a rich source of vitamin E and is known to rejuvenate skin by replacing the dead skin layers with fresh ones. This is a crucial function when you are experiencing frostbite.

Aloe Vera application eases the obstructed blood circulation which in turn boosts the healing process. Aloe Vera is very effective on moderate frostbite. Apply it 3-4 times in a day on the affected skin.

Potatoes

Warm boiled potatoes are known to be anti-inflammatory in nature. Mash a boiled potato and spread on a cotton strip. Wrap it around the area that has been affected by frostbite. Remove the wrap when the potato lose warmth. Re-wrap again and continue to do this procedure until sensation and colour is restored in extremity.

Ginger

Ginger is known to boost the blood circulation to extremities and limb. When affected by frostbite, ginger based treatment can help in preventing permanent damage to the affected body part.  In exposure to extreme temperature the blood vessels freeze and narrow down which causes hindrance and consequent numbness and loss of limbs.

Ginger increase the fluidity of the blood which encourages healthy blood circulation. It is also anti-inflammatory in nature thereby relieving from the pain caused by frostbite.

Warm Water Therapy

It is important to control the frostbite by providing gentle and gradual warmth to the affected part. Take a tub of water at room temperature and gradually add warm water to it. Basically by the time you are done adding water, the temperature of water should be about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Avoid using hot water as it will worsen the condition by causing damage to the skin. Dry heat and heating pads are equally dangerous on your frostbitten skin as hot water.

Garlic Oil

Garlic oil is known for its warm properties. Take a teaspoon of garlic oil which is heated to achieve lukewarm temperature. Apply on the affected area and massage gently

You will find numbness receding in the extremities affected by frostbite as you massage them. Garlic is also an anti-inflammatory agent and thus the oil massage acts as a natural painkiller as well. Post treatment infection is also prevented by this oil.

Massage

Never rub the affected area as it can damage the skin tissue and peel it off in severe cases. Take some mustard oil and warm it. Apply it profusely on the frostbitten skin so that your fingers slip properly while giving a massage. Be very gentle while you are massaging the extremities. Massage will warm up the affected area gradually and restore the blood circulation thereby, kick starting the healing process.
