When you are suffering from insomnia you must be finding it difficult to sleep and remain asleep for long periods of time. You need at least seven hours of sleep at night, but are getting a maximum of three to four hours and that too in multiple spells. So you need cure from insomnia, but traditional remedies are not coming to much help. Sleeping pills are not a remedy; rather you should stay away from long-term use of sleeping pills. Valerian

This herb has been used since ancient times as a sedative and to induce sleep. There are some chemicals in valerian which have muscle relaxant and sedative character. However, the root of valerian is very rich in these chemicals.

So valerian root can be used quite effectively to calm and relax the muscles and sedate the nervous system which will ultimately lead to deep sleep for a long time.

Chamomile

Chamomile has been used for a long time to sedate the nervous system. Because of this property chamomile is also used to numb painful symptoms. It has a property whereby it can alleviate some of the anxiety feelings that you may be having and that is refraining you from falling asleep.

Lavender

Lavender is used to strengthen and tone up the nervous system. Moreover, it has a calming effect on the nervous system and therefore on your body and mind. The oil can be used as a massage or a compress to treat insomnia.

Passion Flower

If the insomnia seems to have been brought about by exhaustion and mental worry then you need something that has a sedative property. To this effect you can use passion flower. It is used for treating insomnia in adults as well as children.

Wild Lettuce

Lettuce is very effective in treating anxiety, headache, muscle pain, joint pain etc. It is also used to treat restlessness. So if any of these is causing your insomnia then you can use wild lettuce every day. You can also use wild lettuce supplement. So use wild lettuce every day to treat insomnia.

California Poppy

If your insomnia is due to restlessness and anxiety then there is another herb that can trick the nervous system into sleep. It can be prescribed even for children.  It helps you to fall asleep as well as improves the quality of your sleep. Tincture of this herb is available over the counter. Hops

This is another category of herb that has been found to be quite effective in treating insomnia, depression, anxiety, hysteria and even indigestion. But do not offer it to pregnant women or young children.
