Most often improper feeding position does not allow the baby to suck milk properly and the result is tearing of the nipples. Sore nipples can have symptoms like pain, itchiness, swelling and sometimes discharge of watery fluid. All these symptoms cause lot of discomfort. There are many over the counter ointments and creams that can bring relief, but you can try these natural drug-free remedies for quick healing and relief.
The best natural remedy for sore nipple is using your own breast milk itself. Breast milk contains amazing anti-bacterial properties, which is often used as a folk remedy for getting rid of many kind of skin irritations. Just rub few drop of milk on your nipples after cleaning it properly. Let it air dry. Repeat this process several times a day for quick healing.[1]
Basil leaves contain anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties which have been used in Ayurvedic medicines for centuries for getting rid of numerous skin problems. Application of basil leaves will heal the wound and reduce swelling and pain along with healing the cracks and dryness. Take handful of basil leaves, after washing them thoroughly, grind them to paste and apply on the nipples. Let the paste dry and then wash off with clean water before feeding your baby. Apply 2-3 times a day for quick healing.[2]
Application of tea bag has been found to provide considerable relief from sore nipples. Tea contains a compound known as tannins, which has astringent properties. Applying tea bags dipped in warm water helps to improve blood circulation, reduce pain and inflammation and brings relief from discomfort by healing the breast tissue. Apply tea bags after soaking them in warm water every 2-3 minutes to ease pain and heal soreness of the nipples. Wash the nipples before feeding your baby so that no traces of tannin are left.[3]

Massaging the sore nipples with coconut, olive or almond oil can also bring relief from cracked dry nipples which are one of reason for soreness. Calendula flowers have antibacterial properties which can be used to reduce the chances of infection and bring relief from pain and inflammation. To use this natural remedy, make paste of 2-3 calendula flowers and apply on nipple area. Leave it until it dries. Wash off with clean water. The antiseptic and anti-fungal property of tea tree oil can also be used as natural remedy for sore nipples. Application of tea tree oil will minimize the risk of infection, promote quick healing. To apply this remedy, add 1-2 drop of tea tree oil in a bowl of warm water and with the help of sterilized cotton ball, dab the solution on the sore nipples.
