In the past hypertension was considered something that afflicted the elderly or people with a history of heart disease. Hypertension can affect anyone. With obesity becoming more prevalent in many societies, high blood pressure among children and teenagers is occurring on a regular basis. While there are a number of prescription medications to help with this disease, there are also natural cures.

Feel free to try any of the natural cures suggested, but if you are already taking a prescription medication, please do not discontinue its usage, without consulting with your physician first.

One herb that can help reduce hypertension is garlic. Garlic is a member of the onion family. The cloves of the garlic can be consumed fresh and whole. Or the cloves can be minced and added to your favorite meals. Garlic also comes in a powder format that can be sprinkled on foods and used in recipes in place of salt. Since high sodium levels can contribute to high blood pressure it is important to avoid garlic salt. This product is made up of mostly salt, which is not beneficial for your body. Fresh garlic is available at most grocery stores, whole food stores and health food stores. Garlic powder can be found in the spice section of your grocery store.

Garlic is also available as a natural supplement that can be taken daily in place of adding fresh garlic to your meals. You should take the supplement with a full glass of water. The garlic supplement can be found at your local health food store or some pharmacies. In addition to help lowering high blood pressure levels, garlic can also aid in the reduction of bad (LDL) cholesterol. Garlic is also a natural antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal and antioxidant. When consumed regularly, garlic can help reduce the risks associated with heart disease and reduced risks for certain cancers. Garlic can be used as an expectorant when treating a cold. Further, garlic consumption has been found to help regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Garlic has so many useful qualities that it often overlooked. When made part of your diet and consumed daily it can offer many medicinal benefits beyond reducing hypertension.
