There are different levels of acne, mild, moderate and severe. Even though all acne is produced by the same thing, each level needs to be treated differently. Knowing which acne treatment is the best to use will keep your acne to a minimum.

Mild acne is the most common and easiest to treat. There are many different acne treatments that target mild acne. The first, and most common, is benzoyl peroxide. This treatment works by killing the bacteria that causes acne. It also reduces inflammation and helps unclog pores. Salicylic acid is another acne treatment that helps with mild acne. It helps shed dead skin cells that could clog pores. Alcohol and acetone are other treatments that work best together. The bacteria that causes the acne is killed by the alcohol and the sebum is reduced by the acetone.

Moderate acne is also fairly common. In addition to the acne treatments used for mild acne, there are treatments that target moderate acne. Topical retinoids are a very common acne treatment. The topical retinoids exfoliate the skin at a rapid rate. Since the skin cells are changing quickly, the pores do not become clogged. It also helps reduce the rate of sebum production. Topical antibiotics are other moderate acne treatments. The first thing this treatment does is stop the growth of bacteria. It also reduces inflammation and prevents the pores from becoming blocked.

Severe acne is a serious skin condition. Using the mild or moderate acne treatments may help, but it will not be enough. Taking an oral antibiotic along with other treatment will help reduce the bacteria and inflammation. Isotretinoin is another form of severe acne treatment. It shrinks the sebaceous glands and therefore, the amount of sebum produced is greatly decreased. There are some known side effects, so this type of treatment is prescribed by a doctor. Taking an oral contraceptive is also a treatment for severe acne. The contraceptive will balance the amount of hormones and therefore control the amount of sebum that is produced.

Acne treatments work differently for each person. If you have mild or moderate acne, try the different types of treatments and see which one works best for you. However, if you experience severe acne, speak with your doctor about which treatment is best for you.
