Commonly occurring functional disorder of the gut is referred as Irritable bowel syndrome. The functionality of gut gets affected, but structurally all parts seem normal, when observed under microscope.
IBS cause is not known and it may affect any age group, more predominantly teenagers and young adults who tend to have weird eating behaviors that could be responsible for high risk of IBS. Intolerance to specific foods or over activity of the muscles and nerves of the gut could be the cause, but it is still not confirmed scientifically.
IBS is more frequently seen in women than men.IBS symptoms generally get worse after meals and occur as bouts of pain. The symptoms may be severe for 2-4 days initially, then usually get lessen with time but do not vanish completely.
Different parts of abdomen may experience varied flashes of pain. The pain normally eased after passage of motions or wind. Certain people refer the pain as coli or a spasm but colitis occurs in case of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and IBS is not considered as true ‘colitis’.
The severity of IBS pain may vary from mild to strong in the same person, and may totally differ from severity in other IBS afflicted persons. Abdominal swelling and bloating may occur intermittently with passage of more wind.
Persons could suffer from constipation or diarrhea or alternate diarrhea and constipation cycle. Stool may become pellet like or could be ribbon form or watery and at times, mucus may also be observed in the stools. Usually, after passage of stools, a feeling of fullness still remains.
Some may experience an urgency to visit toilet, generally more after getting up in the morning or even during or after the breakfast. Morning rush generally becomes a common behavior in IBS patients. IBS affected persons may complain of nausea, tiredness, backache, muscular pains, belching, heartburn, poor appetite and feeling of fullness, just after eating.
Some experience occasional mild symptoms but others may have unpleasant experiences for long period of time.
The correct understanding of IBS will lessen your anxiety and reduce the severity of the situation. With proper care, symptoms usually get settled without any treatment.
