Common Sense Fever Treatment

Share

A fever is a sign of an underlying infection, maybe a cold or the flu.  Your body is using its heat to kill the infection and it is best to let the fever do its work.  Cooperate with your immune system by getting lots of rest and avoiding strenuous activities.  Drink lots of healthy fluids to keep your body hydrated.

Hot soups, broths and teas are comforting and provide the needed liquid and some valuable nutrition.  Soups and broths made with garlic, rosemary, turmeric, oregano and black pepper are nourishing and provide some medicinal benefits.

Herbal teas that are made with elder flowers, yarrow flowers, peppermint or ginger are traditionally recommended by herbalists for fever.  Echinacea and chamomile teas have a good reputation as cold and flu fighters and can help to build up the immune system.  As a general rule, make herbal tea using one to two teaspoons of herb for each cup of boiling water.  Let herbs steep in the water for at least five minutes before straining and drinking.  Herbal teas can be served iced if you wish.  They can be mixed with fruit juices to make them more palatable for children or finicky appetites.  Use honey to sweeten bitter teas.

If a patient is uncomfortable with a high fever, prepare a lukewarm bath with soothing herbs.  Lavender is a calming herb that promotes sleep.  Rosemary has been used to relieve body aches.  The bath should last for 10 to 15 minutes and the patient should not be allowed to take a chill.  In lieu of a bath, a lukewarm sponge bath may provide the same comfort.  Do not use water that is too hot or too cold.  Never use alcohol for a sponge bath when fever is present.

If you decide to use medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to bring down a fever and reduce headache and body ache in an older child or adult and the fever does not respond, it is time to call a doctor for advice.  A fever in an infant under six months should always be checked by a medical professional.  Older children and adults can let a fever run its course unless there are other serious symptoms in addition to fever.
