Escherichia coli or E. coli are a type of bacteria. There are many different strains of the bacteria. While most forms of the bacteria are not harmful to people, there are a few strains that can cause infection and illness. Children are more easily infected with the harmful type of the bacteria than adults. As parents there are several things we can do to help prevent our children from becoming infected with E. coli.
E. coli can be found in beef, raw fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized beverages and even water. Water from pools, lakes and oceans can be sources of the bacteria as a result of human waste being left in the water. Milk, bottled juices and bottled water that are not pasteurized can contain the harmful bacteria. You should always make sure to purchase products that have been pasteurized as the process kills bacteria.
Children should be discouraged from drinking water from pools, lakes and oceans. While it is impossible to prevent smaller children from drinking some of the water, we can prevent them from drinking large amounts. Public pools contain chlorine and other chemicals that will kill most germs but not e. coli.
Children should be taught about proper hand washing using an anti-bacteria soap and warm water. Parents should encourage and enforce hand washing many times throughout the day. Children should get into the habit of washing their hands before eating, after playing outdoors and after using the bathroom.
You should prevent your children from eating raw fruits and vegetables when in the grocery store. You need to thoroughly wash these items before allowing children to consume them. When preparing beef, you should make sure your children’s beef is cooked well and that there is no pink left in the middle.
As parents it is our responsibility to make sure our children are kept safe from infection by E. coli. Raw meats should be kept separate in the refrigerator from cooked meats. When preparing foods on your countertop, you should wipe down the countertop with antibacterial wipes when switching between meats, vegetables and other food items to prevent cross-contamination.
