Ear Ache Home Remedies

If an earache strikes in the middle of the night, it is good to know that you may have a remedy for earache in your kitchen.

Oils in Your Cupboard

Olive oil can be warmed carefully and a few drops put into the affected ear. Always test the warmth of the oil to make sure it is not too hot. Other oils, like castor oil and baby oil, can also be used.  Other common vegetable oils for cooking can be warmed to soothe the ear and help dissolve excess ear wax.  It is best to lightly tuck some clean cotton into the ear to hold in the oil.

Vinegars

A mixture of half apple cider vinegar and half rubbing alcohol can also be put into the ear a few drops at a time to fight infection and dry up any discharge from the ear.  Some people think white vinegar and rubbing alcohol are best.  Either one should work just fine.  This remedy for earache can be repeated twice a day until the pain eases.

Veggies

An old-time remedy for earache is to chop an onion fine and place it in a clean cloth.  Squeeze or press on the cloth to remove excess onion juice and place it on the aching ear.
Garlic can be squeezed in a press and the juice mixed with castor oil and a few drops put into the ear.  Garlic has some natural antibiotic properties that can help to heal infections.

Hot Compresses

There are many ways to make hot compresses in your kitchen if you don’t have a hot water bottle handy.  The easiest may be a cloth dipped in hot water and wrung out.  To avoid wet pillows, put the cloth in a plastic bag and microwave it for 30 seconds.  You can use it directly on the ear or wrap it with another cloth.  Just make sure the temperature is not too hot.

Whether you use oil or vinegar or onion, always use heat.  It soothes and calms the pain and will help to make any remedy for earache more effective.
