It is one of the best natural sources of vitamin C, a micronutrient essential for the health and function of the immune system. It also contains potent antioxidant compounds that help in improving the function of the immune system by improving the antioxidant profile of the body.
Several studies have highlighted the role of the Emblica officinalis fruit and herbal formulations that contain Emblica officinalis as a key ingredient in activating the immune system and inducing production of immune cells during infections.
The root of the plant Withania somnifera, commonly known as Ashwagandha or winter cherry, is a popular herbal remedy for poor immunity. People vulnerable to infections can take about 3 to 6 grams of powdered Withania somnifera root daily for improving the function of the immune system.
According to studies, Withania somnifera root is a powerful immunoregulator. It stimulates white blood cell production, thereby improving the body’s ability to fight infections. Moreover, the anti-stress and antioxidant properties of the herb help in maintaining healthy immune function by reducing the levels of stress hormones and free radicals that tend to weaken the immune system.
The root of the plant Astragalus membranaceus has been used for centuries for strengthening the immune system. People with weakened immune system can take about 250 to 500 mg of powdered astragalus root thrice a day.
Astragalus helps in activating the immune system. It is especially effective in countering the harmful effect of chemotherapy drugs on the immune system. Regular intake of decoction prepared with astragalus root helps in reducing the risk of infections.
Echinacea is a time-tested herbal remedy for low immunity. Studies suggest that the upper parts of the plant are especially rich in polysaccharides that help in activating the immune system. Echinacea is recommended for people with weakened immune system. However, it should not be taken for a prolonged period. Long-term intake of the herb can cause liver problems.
Panax ginseng is widely recommended in the traditional medicines of the East Asian countries for improving the body’s resistance to infections. Studies suggest that ginseng works by stimulating production of natural killer cells, macrophages, T Cells, B Cells and dendritic cells.
Although immune enhancing compounds are present throughout the plant, the roots of ginseng are especially rich in plant compounds that help in strengthening the immune system.
