Anemia is a blood disorder that millions of people suffer from. In fact, it is the most common blood disorder in the world. Anemic people have a reduced amount of red blood cells. Red blood cells hold an iron-rich substance called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Without enough oxygen, an anemic person’s organs and tissues will not function properly.
There are many different types of anemia. The most common form of anemia is iron deficiency. Other types include vitamin deficiency, sickle cell, hemolytic and chronic disease. Some of these are inherited and others develop from an ailment.
There are certain signs and symptoms that could help you diagnose whether or not your are anemic. One of the most common symptoms of anemia is fatigue. Since the body is not getting enough oxygen, it will become tired, weak and you will experience a decreased amount of energy. Headache and dizziness are also common symptoms for anemic people. The brain will not be receiving enough oxygen and the body will be working overtime. Fainting spells may also sometimes occur. For certain types of anemia there are different symptoms. Jaundice, pale skin and cold hands and feet are very common among some types of anemia. Poor circulation and blocked blood vessels can cause these. Some anemic people may also experience heart palpitations, chest pain and swollen hands or feet.
One important thing that all anemic people look for is some form of relief. In order to get relief you will need to use one or more treatments. One of the most common treatments is taking an iron supplement. This is especially helpful for iron deficiency anemia. An iron supplement will increase the level of iron in the body and help the production of hemoglobin and transportation of oxygen. You may get the same results by changing your diet to include more iron-rich foods. Red meat, leafy greens and eggs are all iron-rich foods. Sometimes, more treatments are needed. In some severe cases, a blood transfusion will be needed. If you are anemic due to blood loss, then using a transfusion to replace the blood will also replace the red blood cells and increase the hemoglobin production. Hemoglobin injections or bone marrow transplants may also be needed to get rid of the anemia.
Anemic people know all too well that having anemia can be an uncomfortable and painful problem. Knowing which type you have and which treatment options are available will help ease the pain and discomfort. If you experience any symptoms, you should speak with your doctor immediately.
