Mucus is a slippery and viscous substance secreted by the mucous membranes. It contains antiseptic enzymes that provide protection to the epithelial cells in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, visual, auditory and urogenital systems. Excess mucus, however, can congest the respiratory tract and is a sign of infection such as influenza, paranasal sinus, asthma and bronchitis. Allergies and colds also cause excessive mucus to be secreted.
The bronchi and bronchioles produce thick and yellowish green mucus which is full of dead and live bacteria and other infection causing microorganisms. It blocks the airways, causes congestion in the chest and the nasal passages and hampers breathing.It also produces coughing and uncommon irritation in the throat which makes one want to clear the throat incessantly but to no avail. Antibiotics seem to be the common solution but these destroy the good bacteria in the body and do more harm than good. However, natural substances can be safely used not only to cure the malady but also to keep the healthy bacteria intact in the body.
Ginger has the most potent anti-bacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which kill the infection rapidly and clear the congestion in the chest and nasal passages. Heat one teaspoon of ghee and add one teaspoon of dried ginger powder to it.Swallow the mixture with glass of hot milk once, every morning. Do not drink water or any other liquid for an hour. Regular use will not bring considerable relief in the cough and congestion but will also stop the excessive production of mucus.
Holy basil is very much renowned for its superb antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. Boil a glass of water and add ten leaves of basil and one teaspoon of grated fresh ginger to it. Simmer for two minutes then allow the decoction to stand for ten minutes. Strain the tea and drink three cups of it daily. Regular use will not only eradicate the infection and decongest the chest but will also decrease the secretion of excessive mucus.
Black pepper is hot and full of antibacterial, antimicrobial, decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties. Crush a handful of black pepper coarsely and mix it with some honey and store it into a jar. Eat a teaspoon of this mixture once in the morning and once before going to bed.Chew the pepper well before swallowing it. Drink a cup of hot milk after eating the mixture. Your problem of chronic mucus will abate over a period of time.
Turmeric has natural antibiotic and antibacterial properties. It not only kills all the infection causing microorganisms but also inhibits the production of excessive mucous. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder into a glass of hot milk and drink it every night before going to bed.If you take this, round the year, your body’s immunity will increase manifold and you will be able to get rid of your problem completely.
