Foods to Avoid with Heart Disease

If you are diagnosed with heart disease, most likely you have other medical problems that lead to this point. Most likely you also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. You may even be overweight or obese. While there are medications your health provider may prescribe to treat the high blood pressure and high cholesterol, these medications will only help to a certain extent. The best course of action is to eliminate the behaviors that caused the problems in the first place.

It seems that all the foods that taste the best and that we like the most are really not healthy when consumed as a part of our normal diet and in excessive quantities. By eliminating these foods from your eating habits, you will not only reduce your risks of heart disease, but reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. If you consider the alternative of not changing your eating habits, which can lead to heart attacks and premature death, it is better to make the change.

Foods that should be avoided are foods high in saturated fats and trans fats. These foods include oils used for deep fried foods, such as chicken, fish, donuts, cheese sticks, French fries, potato chips or any other food that is deep fried. Certain dairy products are naturally full of saturated and trans fats. These include butter, hard cheeses, sour cream and whole milk.

Another group of foods that contain saturated and trans fats include baked goods, like cakes, pastries, pies, and any breaded coatings added to meats that are baked. While it is true that baking is better than frying foods, these baked products get their saturated and trans fats from the butter and oils used in the mixes.

Certain meats and parts of meats can be unhealthy as well. Beef that has fat marbled in-between the beef should not be eaten. The skin on poultry meats like chicken and turkey should be removed and not eaten. Pork products should be avoided completely. Sausages should be avoided as these are made from beef, pork, or poultry but contain a lot of fat. Organ meats like liver and kidneys should not be eaten either.
