Heel spurs are cause by a bone growth on the back of the foot near the ankle. What happens is the ligaments in the back of the foot become stretched or detached from the bone. The body tries to compensate by calcifying the ligament and growing more bone. This occurs as a result of too much strain being put on the back of the foot.

Heel spurs can be caused by several factors, such as obesity, arthritis, and tendonitis. Wearing tight fitting shoes or high heels excessively can also cause the problem. You may or may not feel pain from the spur. Unless you are in constant pain from the spur there is no reason to have it surgically removed, since the body can make another one. The best course of action is to determine what factors caused the spur in the first place. Once you can be certain of the cause, then you can determine the best treatment that works for you.

There are several natural home treatments and herbal treatments for heel spurs. If you like teas, you can use the herb rose hip to help promote tissue growth instead of bone growth. Simply mix the rose hip with boiling water to make rose hip tea. You can add honey to sweeten the tea. You can drink up to three cups a day each day. If you do not like the flavor of rose hip tea, you can use any other tea and add about of teaspoon of dried rose hip and boil in the water for about ten minutes.

Turmeric powder is a spice that can also be used as a treatment. Take the powder and mix with a little bit of warm water to make a paste. Apply the paste to the affected toe and cover lightly. Leave this mixture on the toe for about thirty minutes. Rinse the toe with cool water and dry with a soft cloth. The turmeric contains curcumin and has the same effects as cortisone. You may also add a small amount of turmeric powder to a hot beverage. You should not consume more than 3,000 mg of turmeric daily.
