High Blood Pressure Exercises

Share

High blood pressure can be the result of being overweight and having high cholesterol. Being overweight causes the heart to beat faster in order to pump blood throughout the body.

High cholesterol causes fatty deposits to build up on the linings of walls of the arteries and veins. This too causes the heart to beat faster. While your health care provider probably will prescribe medication to help reduce high blood pressure, it is important to not only change to a healthy diet, but also start and maintain an exercise plan.

Easy Exercises to Start Your Plan

Exercises should not place a further strain on the heart. You should find exercises that are easy and simple to do. Walking is one easy exercise that you can do. All that is required is to walk at a normal and steady pace for about fifteen to twenty minutes at least three times a week. You can walk just about anywhere. If you walk on a treadmill you should start out at the lowest setting.

Another exercise you can start off with that is simple to do is walking around the shallow end of the pool. Water creates resistance against the body so it helps build muscles. You should only walk in water that does not go above your waist.

You should move at a slow and steady pace. Do not try to rush too fast because walking too quickly in the water can cause your heart rate to go up too high. You can do this exercise for about ten minutes a few times a week instead of walking.

Exercise You Should Avoid

You should avoid exercises like climbing stairs, running, jogging or going up sharp inclines. These exercises can be strenuous on the heart when you first begin an exercise plan. You should also avoid using weights when you first start off.

You should consult with your health care provider before beginning any exercise or diet plan. Once you begin your exercise plan, you should consult with your health care provider before changing exercises or adding weights. Exercising on regular basis will not only help your heart to become stronger, but also help you lose weight and lower your high blood pressure.
