Nature has abundantly blessed us with several beneficial species of flora. Unfortunately certain noxious plant breeds also co-exist with the human friendly plants. One among such existing harmful plants is Poison Ivy. This plant exists in the form of a vine, shrub or climbing vine that grows on a solid support and is commonly found in woodlands.
Poison Ivy causes awful rash when it comes in contact with human skin. The rashes are accompanied by pain, swelling and blisters. Intense itching, inflammation, acute burning sensation and fever are also common. This plant contains a toxic compound called urushiol that is responsible for these symptoms. These symptoms occur anywhere between a few hours to seven days on exposure to this plant.
Presumptions that reactions of a Poison Ivy plant can be treated only with anti allergen drugs are completely false. There are several natural ways to treat these allergic reactions. On exposure to this plant, an immediate water wash can prevent the plant compound from spreading.
This is a well-known garden plant and it is used to cure various skin ailments. This plant contains compounds that can neutralize the effects of urushiol. The stem of this plant should be rubbed on the affected areas of the skin. The symptoms will subside significantly.
Alternatively, an infusion can be brewed with chopped jewelweed. Application of this infusion on the exposed area is also effective. This infusion can be used for long periods and can also be frozen or canned.
Applying a spoonful of apple cider vinegar on the affected area can remove the toxin out of the pores. A vinegar compress can be developed with warm vinegar and light cotton towels for use on the rashes.
The application of fruits may sound strange. Fruits like banana and watermelon have cooling effects on the skin and they can provide relief from itching and burning sensation. Banana contains an anti inflammatory compound called allantoin.
For effective cure, simply rub the inside of a banana or the fleshy part of a water melon on the exposed area. Let it dry and wash it off. A hot shower prior to application of these fruits can control profuse itching.
Menthol is an organic compound extracted from mint plants or peppermint. It is well known for its cooling effects and it can effectively combat rashes and blisters. Menthol crystals or flakes can be dissolved in distilled water and applied on the affected area.
Peppermint oil is also known to provide relief from rashes. A few drops of this oil can be added to your warm water bath for relief from inflammation and itches. A paste formed with a few drops of peppermint oil, one tablespoon of salt and one cup of green clay when applied and washed after 30 minutes prevents itching and stops the rashes from spreading.
Tea tree oil has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. After washing the affected area, rub a few drops of tea tree oil with a clean cotton ball. Repeated application for few times a day clears the rashes and blisters from the skin.
Aloe Vera is an excellent cure for most skin complaints. It soothes the irritated skin and has anti-inflammatory properties. For best results, buy a plant from an organic store, slice the leaves and use the gel from the inner flesh. Apply this gel liberally on the exposed area.
Boil some peach tree leaves in water and let it cool. Apply this mixture on the exposed area with the help of a cotton ball.Re-apply as frequently as possible.
