Fever is a rise in the body temperature. The rise in temperature occurs when our body’s immune system is fighting against infections from viruses and bacteria. The normal temperature of body ranges from 97 °F to 99 °F but the temperature may vary the whole day.
Generally our body temperature remains lower early morning and rises during late afternoon. Fever occurs when the temperature rises above the normal level. Medically the term ‘pyrexia’ is used for fever. Degree of the fever does not necessarily signify the intensity of the fever or its seriousness. Sometimes a negligible problem may cause high fever, and severe illness may show low fever. Sometimes it takes only few days for the temperature to get back to the normal state. However it is to be noted that fever definitely plays a vital part in body’s natural process of defense against foreign infections. It should not be confused with illness all the time but if the temperature exceeds to ‘104 °F’ then it can be a serious concern.
Causes may vary from allergic reactions, infections, certain illness, and hormonal disorders. Fevers occur mostly due to flu, viruses and common cold. Some of the diseases such as urinary tract infection, pneumonia, cancer, viral hepatitis, malaria, and whooping cough can also result in fever. Fevers can also be side effect from certain medications. Excessive or heavy exercise in hot weather and certain hormonal disorders like hypothyroidism can result in fever too.
Common symptoms of fever include headache, muscle ache, burning sensation in eyes, increase in the production of saliva, feeling of nausea and heaviness, vomiting or feeling of the same, tiredness, night sweats, breathing trouble, reduced appetite and coated tongue. High fever may result in irritability and hallucinations.
