Nausea is a discomfort or feeling of unease in stomach that urges an individual to vomit or makes the person think to vomit. Nausea is accompanied frequently by stomach cramping and excess salivation.
A number of conditions and diseases are responsible for causing nausea which includes indigestion, food poisoning, stomach flu, overdrinking or overeating, viral infections, gallstones, cancer and pancreatitis. It can also be due to pregnancy, headache or motion sickness. Sometimes emotional anxiety, unpleasant tastes or smell can also provoke nausea. Whatever its reason, nausea is really an unpleasant experience. Nausea is also a common symptom for various diseases.
Stomach Pain – patient may experience severe stomach pain.
Dizziness – patient may experience weakness. Anxiety and dizziness are common symptoms of nausea.
Sweating – you may sweat instantly due to a nauseating effect within your body.
Vomiting – Nausea is always accompanied by a feeling of vomiting.
Most of the nausea symptoms may seem to have been generated from abdominal area while they actually are governed by brain and more or less psychological by nature. Sometimes actual vomiting may take place or the person will simply feel dry heaves. Dehydration is also another common problem associated with nausea.
The loss of nutrients and fluids make cause symptoms like dry lips and mouth, rapid breathing and sunken eyes. However vomiting and nausea during pregnancy period is very common. In fact this is also a symptom of pregnancy in the first trimester.
Luckily there are plenty of natural and safe remedies available to treat nausea at home without any further side effects.
Eat a small piece of pickled or fresh ginger. Ginger is very effective in subsiding nausea. You can also prepare a tea of ginger. Take a teaspoonful of fresh ginger root. Finely chop or grate it. Now add I cup boiling water to it. Cover and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the concoction and drink it. If you have grated the ginger well, you do not need to strain. So drink everything for even better results. You may also add milk or honey if desired. Ginger is one of the old and trusted home remedy for treating nausea.
You can also take 2 dried ginger capsules of 500 mg regularly. Alternatively you can also use ginger powder from your kitchen spice rack. Mix half teaspoon powdered ginger in one cup boiling water. Let it steep for ten minutes. However this remedy will not be effective as fresh ginger root because processed ginger powder contains lot of volatile oils mixed in it.
In eight ounces of water mix 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar and drink. This remedy is particularly beneficial for treating nausea caused by food poisoning or morning sickness.
Mint is actually a very soothing herb that helps to settle and calm the stomach. Spearmint or peppermint tea is very useful in easing nausea. You can also use peppermint oil as an aromatherapeutic cure. In your middle finger put two drops of peppermint oil and take the smell.
For peppermint tea take one cup boiling water and add half cup fresh peppermint leaves to it. Allow the mixture to steep for 10 minutes. Then strain it and drink. This is one of the very old home remedies for nausea but very effective.
Lemon works wonder in curing nausea. Take the smell of a fresh cut lemon and see the difference. You can also mix lemon juice in one glass of warm water and take slow sips. It works very well too. Lemon is a simple and one of the effective natural remedies for nausea. Warm liquids like tea, warm milk, broth also help to soothe the stomach and heal nausea.
Carbonated beverages like soda is effective to suppress nausea or morning sickness related to stomach flu. Very slow sips are recommended for this remedy. You can also take saltine crackers to settle upset stomach.
Fennel can be used to treat nausea in many different ways. As tincture, in eight ounce water add 40 drops and drink. Fennel seeds are very beneficial; you only need to chew the seeds well before gulping down.
Chamomile is a very effective natural remedy for nausea during pregnancy. It improves digestion and gives soothing effect. One cup of chamomile tea is enough to treat nausea naturally.
Lemon balm is a good peppermint substitute. it is not minty but works well. This remedy is also safe for pregnant ladies. To make lemon balm tea, take one teaspoon leaves and add one cup boiling water to it. Let it sit for few minutes. As it gets cool drink two to three unsweetened cups every day. In pregnancy you should not exaggerate. One cup of lemon balm or peppermint tea is sufficient.
In case of treating nausea due to medications cumin works wonder. Cumin contains antiemetic effect which helps to eliminate nausea and act locally as well as in central nervous system. Make a tea by combing peppermint and cumin in equal proportions. Drink 0.5 to 1 liter in a day in unsweetened form, preferably before the main meals.
You should strictly avoid cold drinks or carbonated drinks during the feeling of nausea. If you need to eat during that time, take light carbohydrates like toast or crackers. As you start feeling better go for light proteins like fish or chicken breast. Raspberries are really useful for treating nausea from morning sickness. Take a small bowl of raspberries in morning.
You should take a fiber rich diet as you feel better. Rice, banana, toast and apple sauce are rich in fiber. Small amount of food is recommended for diet. Also stay away for fried, spicy, oily and junk foods. Your diet should comprise of fresh vegetables and fruits. If indigestion is your reason of getting nausea then avoid foods that upset your stomach.
To treat nausea due to indigestion take a balanced meal comprised of papaya, pineapple and acidophilus. Also include yoghurt in diet as yoghurt contains friendly bacteria that aids in the nausea treatment naturally. Avoid all dairy products, beans and processed foods. Eat smaller amount and chew properly for proper digestion.
