Gastric ulcers can affect anyone. It is a myth that these types of ulcers are the result of stress. While stress can cause other medical problems, it does not contribute to this condition. These types of ulcers are also called stomach ulcers or peptic ulcers. They are a result of having too much acid in your stomach that eats away at the stomach lining causing sores to develop. If left untreated, the sores can become bigger and even get to the point where holes are created in the stomach lining.
Once diagnosed with gastric ulcers it is important to take any medications prescribed by your health provider. There are natural treatments that you can use in conjunction with your medication that will help aid in the healing of the sores. Depending on your situation and medical history, you may have to take medication long term or may be able to discontinue further treatment once the problem has subsided. Diagnosis should be performed by a qualified medical professional as other conditions like GERD and chronic heartburn have similar symptoms.
Natural treatments include several lifestyle changes. If you smoke tobacco products, you should quit as this only irritates stomach ulcers. Drinking beverages that contain caffeine such as coffee, tea and carbonated drinks can prolong the problem. Any alcoholic beverages should also be discontinued. If you take aspirin on a regular basis as a blood thinner, you should find an alternative.
Changes to your diet can greatly help reduce gastric ulcers. You should avoid foods that are high in acids. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes and other citrus fruits should be avoided. Fruit juices from citrus fruits, apples and grapes should be avoided. Tomatoes and tomato based sauces should not be eaten. Foods that contain vinegar, like pickles or vinegar based dressings, also contain acids that can irritate your ulcers. Certain spicy foods and the use of tobacco sauce should be avoided. Even though garlic has many beneficial medicinal properties, if it causes stomach aches or pain should be avoided if you have stomach ulcers. Foods that are deep fried should be avoided as they can increase stomach acids.
