Share

Why the causes of high cholesterol can vary from person to person, treating it is important. Even though there are prescription medications that can help reduce high cholesterol levels, they can have side effects, sometimes even severe. There are other natural ways that you can reduce cholesterol levels just from the foods you eat.

Foods that contain soluble fiber can help reduce cholesterol when eaten regularly. Even if you are a picky eater, you should be able to find one or two soluble fiber foods that you can eat. If you can consume about a half a cup of these foods each day, you may be able to reduce cholesterol levels by at least five percent. These foods include oats, barley, rye, peas, beans, apples, prunes, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and other berries, artichokes, carrots, brussel sprouts, broccoli and yams.

You can use raw oats or make it into oatmeal. Barley and rye are grains that can be found in breads. The fruits and vegetables should be fresh or frozen for the best effects. If you use canned fruits make sure they do not contain heavy syrup. They should be canned in water. If you use canned vegetables make sure they contain no added sodium. Both the fruits and vegetables can be consumed in their raw state. Raw fruits and vegetables are the best as they have not lost any of their helpful properties. When cooking the vegetables they should be steamed rather than boiled. Boiling vegetables causes them to not only lose their flavor, but vitamins, minerals and other healthy properties.

While most people do not like artichokes, there are other things you can do with this vegetable to help reduce high cholesterol. There is an extract made from the leaves of the plant. The artichoke leaf extract can be a powder, a liquid, a tablet, or a capsule. You can take a few tablets or capsules every day. The powder or liquid form can be added to food to add flavoring. You can obtain artichoke leaf extract from health food or whole food stores.
