Post Heart Attack Healthy Diet

Most people will survive their initial heart attack. The important thing to do after you have one is to change your lifestyle behaviors and habits. While this can seem difficult, the alternative of having another heart attack that can be more severe and lead to death, it is far better to make the changes that can save your life.

Most likely, there were several factors that led up to having your heart attack. You probably also had high cholesterol, hypertension and other diseases that added to your risks. Ignoring the opportunity to make changes to treat these other diseases led up to your current situation.

Changing the foods that you eat is a good place to start. Eliminate all fast food from your diet. Go through your cupboards, refrigerator and freezer. Throw out any food that is high in sodium, cholesterol, trans fats, and saturated fats. This includes any breaded frozen foods like chicken and fish, French fries, and frozen dinners. You should also get rid of cookies, cakes, pastries and donuts. Dairy products, like butter and hard cheeses also need to go. Any canned goods, boxed meals, and the like also need to be tossed if they are not healthy.

You should reduce your daily intake of sodium to no more than 1000 mg per day. You will need to also measure out your meals and only eat recommended portions. You will need to find a salt substitute, like potassium chloride. If you do not already have a spice rack, work on making one. Herbs and spices like garlic, sage, thyme, rosemary, honey, parsley and mint all have medicinal properties.

You will want to add fresh fruits and vegetables to your daily diet. Whole grains and rice should also be added. If you like meat, you need to use only lean cuts of meat, chicken and fish. Remove the skin off of chicken. You should only use low fat dairy products or a soy substitute. Eggs can still be consumed but you should only use the egg whites and discard the yokes. Oatmeal with fresh fruit is a good meal anytime of the day or is a great snack option.
