You are what you eat is a very common and popular adage. Extend this to special food and beverages you may take to improve your health, detox your body and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.
There are treatments and remedies galore, freely available and accessible; to give you ideas to improve your skin and health in general, but there are a few lesser known ones which can give the luster, tone and glow back to your skin. To obtain beauty from inside, and rejuvenate your skin, read the tips given below:
Also known as Apple Cider Vinegar, or ACV, this is produced by fermenting apple juice to apple cider, and then fermenting it second time to yield the apple cider vinegar. The chief components of ACV are acetic acid and malic acid, but it is a treasure house of vitamins and minerals, with purifying, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits, all of which result in slowing down of the aging process that becomes visible first on our skins. It contains potassium, magnesium, calcium, pectins and also lactic and citric acids.
It has powerful detoxifying properties if taken internally, and it can also be applied externally, to reduce age spots, as a skin toner, to reduce sunburn, and as an acne healer. It regulates the pH of your skin, and also reduces dryness.Ingested with water, it has detoxifying properties which result in better liver function, resulting in cleaner, fresher skin. The recipe for this is to simply mix two teaspoons of vinegar in a cup of water and drink it two or three times a day, preferably before meals, which is also said to result in substantial weight loss.
Drinking this concoction will give a healthy flush to the skin. Remember to use unrefined and unfiltered vinegar, as this retains the ‘Mother Vinegar’, the residue inside unpasteurized cider vinegar which gives it a slightly opaque look. For use as a toner, vinegar can be diluted with two parts water and applied with a cotton ball to the face. It can also be applied to freckles or age spots and will produce definite results if left overnight.
Vitamin E is one of the primary fat-soluble vitamins, which keeps the epithelial layer of the skin healthy and supple, among other things. It is anti-aging because it is an antioxidant, which means that it combines with what we know as ‘free radicals’, and thus prevents them from causing damage to the skin. Vitamin E diminishes scars and evens the skin tone, besides increasing softness and elasticity of the skin.
Vitamin E is obtained from, in decreasing order of the percentage of the daily recommended dose of 1000 mg of Vitamin E provided by them, Wheatgerm oil, Sunflower seeds, roasted, Sunflower oil and almonds, besides peanuts, peanut oils, spinach and other green, leafy vegetables, kiwi fruit, mangoes, pumpkin and papayas.Vitamin E prevents Omega-3 fats from getting oxidized in the body. These fatty acids are also responsible for maintaining the youthfulness of the skin.
It also protects the skin from the UV rays present in sunlight, which age skin, pollutants, and a lot of other factors in the environment which cause skin damage, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.A handful of sunflower seeds consumed everyday would reveal a newer, fresher skin.
The humble carrot contains more than the recommended daily dose of the essential Vitamin A, which also has a huge role to play as far as the health and youthfulness of the skin is concerned.Vitamin A is called the miracle vitamin, because it slows the aging process, improves the condition of the skin, works to remove wrinkles, speeds renewal of epithelial cells and generally keeps skin young and smooth. It is available from both plant and animal sources.
The former are called provitamin carotenoids, and the latter are preformed retinoids. The latter are absorbed more easily in the blood. But plant sources, such as carrots, have an amazing amount of Vitamin A packed in them. Natural plant and animal sources of Vitamin A are preferred over synthetic ones like supplements, as these pose no risk, and the body can convert the Vitamin A into retinol, the form in which Vitamin A is used by the body, as and when the body needs it. This means that there is no danger of Vitamin A overdose, which can be harmful for the body.
Vitamin A is obtained from many sources such as apricots, broccoli, pumpkin, sweet potato, whole eggs, liver and milk, but barring the liver and baked sweet potato, the humble carrot is probably the richest source of Vitamin A. It can provide about 10,300 IU of the vitamin, whereas the recommended daily dose is about 3000 IU for a female.Hence, just about ½ cup of carrot juice, or ½ cup boiled carrot slices can provide more than the required daily dose of Vitamin A, and help you to transform your skin.
The benefits of green tea on skin are due to the presence of some potent antioxidants called Catechins present in it. One of these is the polyphenol called EGCG, which is even more powerful in its antioxidant nature than Vitamins A, C or E. Since antioxidants prevent cell oxidation by free radicals, they slow down aging of the skin. Green tea can be used topically, either in spray form, or in creams, or it can just be drunk daily to enjoy its skin-rejuvenating properties and general healing and soothing properties.
Green tea restores the youthfulness of the skin by neutralizing the effects of sun-damage to the skin. In studies undertaken, it has been revealed that green tea helps to restore to life old, dying epithelial cells, present on the surface of the skin. This amazing fact about increasing longevity of the superficial layer of the skin means that green tea actually works as a potent skin condition enhancer. It is also shown to have a strong anti-inflammatory effect on skin, which means that it is very beneficial to sensitive skin, prone to breakouts.
Most would not have thought that a few teaspoons of vinegar, a handful of sunflower seeds, a carrot and a few cups of green tea a day would prove a kind of miracle cure for your skin, and keep it radiant and young, but the most beneficial remedies are to be found in the simplest of things that Nature has provided us.
