Anemia is a disorder of the blood. It is caused by an inadequate amount of healthy red blood cells and hemoglobin, an iron-rich substance that transports oxygen throughout the body. The organs and tissues will not be able to function properly without enough oxygen. Therefore, there are a lot of side effects of anemia.
One of the most common side effects of anemia is fatigue. Weakness and decreased energy go hand-in-hand with the fatigue as well. The organs and tissues will be overworking to function properly and without the correct amount of oxygen, it will become very difficult. Dizziness and headache are also side effects of anemia. The brain will not be getting enough oxygen and may cause you to become lightheaded. Headaches may also occur due to the lack of iron, vitamin b-12 and folate which are all found in the hemoglobin. In some severe cases, fainting could be a side effect of anemia.
Some less common, but more severe, side effects of anemia include jaundice and heart palpitations. The jaundice is very common with sickle cell anemia. Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin and eyes that is caused by a dysfunctional liver. The liver is responsible for getting rid of any harmful substance in the blood. When there is a large amount of deteriorating cells in the blood, the liver will be working overtime to get rid of them. This may cause the liver to malfunction and the jaundice to form. Heart palpitations are a common side effect for all types of anemia. The heart will be working hard to help keep the organs and tissues functioning. This may cause the palpitations as well as an increased heart rate.
Pale skin and cold hands and feet are also side effects of anemia. These are usually caused by poor circulation and blood flow. With some types of anemia, the deconstructing red blood cells will form a blockage in the blood vessels. The blood will not be able to flow freely and could cause more side effects. Swollen hands and feet are common in this case. Another side effect of anemia that is caused by the blockage is pain. The pain will usually effect the joints and bones, but can sometimes be experienced in the abdomen and chest.
The side effects of anemia can cause uncomfortable and painful situations. It is important to diagnose the problem as soon as it arises. Getting the correct treatment needed will help subside the side effects and give you relief.
