The Truth About Gouty Arthritis

Share

Gouty arthritis is a disease that currently affects around 2% of the total population of America, although according to a number of studies commissioned by the medical community, it would seem that that figure is set to rise, and by a significant amount in the near future especially given the fact that the rate of obesity is also on the rise.

Gouty arthritis can be perhaps best summed up as a health complaint that people think they know all there is to know about it….when in reality, the level of information they possess is limited at best, and typically, riddled with erroneous, misleading information that is incorrect partially or entirely.

The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with the truth about gouty arthritis, as well as the steps they can take to actually deal with it effectively and safely.

What is gouty arthritis?

In short, gouty arthritis is a form of arthritis that primarily targets the big toe (75% of all reported cases of gout relate to the big toe) and is caused by the excessive build up of uric acid deposits that are located within the body and which then crystalise at the joints of the body thereby causing pain and discomfort as a whole.

How can I treat it naturally?

As with any form of arthritis, it is important that the person engages in gentle exercising to strengthen the afflicted joint thereby preventing the muscles from atrophy, as well as ensuring that the range of motion (ROM) of the person is maintained safely as well.  Swimming is a great form of exercise to help alleviate gouty arthritis and the reason for this is due to the fact that the buoyancy of the water will help to ensure that the patient will not suffer excess pressure or weight on their joints.

Increasing the amount of water in the diet is another major step in controlling gouty arthritis and the reason for this is that the disease is caused by the presence of uric acid in the body which is commonly removed by urination. Avoiding excessive levels of salt and alcohol is also recommended, as these will delay the urination process.
