The usage of Corticosteroid for acne skin

Share

There can be no denying the fact that when compared to other health conditions, acne does indeed present less of a direct and imminent threat to the overall health and wellbeing of the sufferer. However, at the same time, one of the most dangerous and worrying things about acne is that the worst amount of damage is and will be inflicted when people underestimate its severity.

This is plainly reflected in the fact that people assume that by simply picking at their acne skin they will be able to bring the worst of it under control and ensure that they do not suffer a relapse. Unfortunately, they do not have the proper medical experience or knowledge to perform such a delicate procedure safely, and so they end up placing themselves at direct risk of sustaining permanent scarring, as well as further infection.

This additional infection that arises as a direct consequence of them interfering with the acne on their body will not just limit itself to manifesting as additional acne, but may actually cause a deeper infection that affects the rest of the body. This is especially true for people who suffer from an impaired autoimmune system (which itself is the natural defence system of the body).

In severe cases of acne, a dermatologist may recommend that the acne sufferer receives a course of  Interlesional Corticosteroid Injections. The following is a brief overview of what exactly Interlesional Corticosteroid Injection therapy will involve.

What is Interlesional Corticosteroid Injection?

As the name would perhaps suggest, the dermatologist will insert the acne cysts with a sterilized needle which happens to contain a heavily diluted amount of “Corticosteroid”. When the needle is injected into the skin, it will pass past the initial layer of skin which the acne has occupied, and will reach what is known as the “sub-epidermal reservoir.”

The reason that it is crucial that the needle actually reaches the sub-epidermal reservoir is that it is will be able to provide much more dramatic effects and results that cannot be achieved by mere topical creams and oral medication alone
