Tips for Preventing Hair Loss

Hair loss can happen to both men and women.  There are things you can do to help in preventing hair loss.  The most important is simply to take care of your hair.  Men and women both overuse hair dryers, curling and straightening irons, hair dyes and chemical treatments.  Try letting your hair dry naturally, and use old fashioned curlers without heat activation to avoid heat damage to your hair and follicles.  It is not good to dye your hair more than once in eight weeks.

The best thing is to let your hair grow gray naturally, but for many of us, this is not an option we want to consider.  There are a wide variety of natural hair dyes that are made from plants, vegetables and other natural ingredients that are not as hard on your hair as chemical based hair dyes are.  These can be found at your local health food store, and even in bigger chain supermarkets.

Hair styling habits such as wearing ponytails, braids and even hats can weaken the hair and follicles, so let your hair down.  Try to avoid overuse of styling products, shampoo and conditioner.  Most shampoos strip your hair of the natural oils that your hair needs, and hairstyling products can be loaded with chemicals that damage your hair.

There are hair care products which are made from natural and even organic ingredients. These products can be found at local health food stores and supermarkets and are much better for the health of your hair. 

The sun can also have damaging effects on your hair, just like your skin.  There are hair products available that have UVA and UVB protecting ingredients, like sunscreen for your hair.  If you are going to be out in the sun for a long period of time, try to cover your hair and head with a loose fitting hat or a nice big handkerchief, available in a wide variety of colors and styles.  Wearing protection on your head will also keep you cooler.  Preventing hair loss begins with simple steps by changing habits now to let your hair live longer!
