A runny nose may not be a worrisome ailment, but it definitely brings with it discomfort and difficulty in breathing. It can be embarrassing at times and there is so scientific cure for it.
However, many herbs, over the years have proved to provide relief from the congestion and inflammation resulting from a condition of running nose. Given below is a list of herbs which combat the situation of cold and provide relief from stuffy nose:
Tea is the most easily available herb for treatment of stuffy nose. A cup of hot tea would be good, in case of cold as it has antihistamine properties.Herbal tea can be prepared by adding tulsi leaves, ginger, elder berry or chamomile while preparing tea. Intake of herbal tea, two to three times in a day has proven to relieve a runny nose almost entirely.
The medicinal chamomile herb, generally used in the dried form is found to be quite potent against nasal dripping. Chamomile, in dried powder form should be added to a cup of water and be allowed to boil in a pan. The steam coming out from the pan should then be breathed in so as to get relief from congestion in the nasal cavity. It reduces inflammation and works as an anti-oxidant too.
The peppermint plant is well known for its medicinal properties and is also known to relieve a dripping nose. Peppermint oil is used for this purpose as it has menthol as its chief ingredient. Inhaling menthol subdues nasal secretions and thus eases breathing. Eucalyptus oil obtained from the eucalyptus tree is a decongestant and is a cold reliever.
Few drops of eucalyptus oil can be put on a handkerchief can be inhaled or alternatively eucalyptus oil can be added to beverages. Another way could be adding it to boiling water and getting a steam treatment for your nose.
The herb thyme has been used since old times for medicinal purposes on account of its antiseptic properties and is believed to cure a runny nose too. Thyme, after drying, can be ground to powdered state and thereafter, its vapors can then be inhaled to fight signs of influenza and cold.
Ginger is often used to get rid of cold as it acts as a warming agent, boosts blood circulation and helps clearing the nasal cavity. Small ginger pieces can be chewed once peeled, or alternatively ginger tea can be consumed to relieve oneself of a runny nose. It is also effective in bringing down inflammation along the respiratory passage.
Turmeric is another herbal way of treating a runny nose. Turmeric in the powdered state can be first soaked in linseed oil and later heated so as to produces fumes. The fumes, when inhaled, clear the nasal passage and restore proper breathing through the nose.
Drinking turmeric milk is also a great idea in the same case. The above mentioned, are effective herbal treatments in case of nasal drip arising from cold, however if these do not work, one must consult a doctor.
