Dry mouth also known as xerostomia is caused by decreased production of saliva in the mouth. Saliva is an important part of a healthy mouth. It lubricates and protects the oral tissues against friction and damage. It also prevents ulcers and sores. Saliva contains antibodies that defend against bacterial and fungal infections. It also neutralizes the acids and helps in the digestion of food.
Without saliva we would not be able to taste the food that we eat. It stimulates the taste buds and enhances the ability to taste. Dry mouth usually occurs as a side effect of such medications as blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, diuretics and ant-inflammatories.
Certain diseases like diabetes, salivary gland diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune disorders can also cause a dry mouth. Sometimes, due to blockage in a major salivary duct can also result in decreased saliva. People who have dry mouth have trouble in speaking, eating, swallowing and tasting food. Dry mouth also causes dry and cracked lips.
Dry mouth is also caused by dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep well hydrated. Water will alleviate the dryness in the mouth and it will also prevent decay and infection by washing away the food particles and plaque.
It helps to neutralize the acids and thus save the teeth enamel from corrosion. Reduce your intake of coffee, alcohol and sugary sodas as these can exacerbate dry mouth

Chew a tablespoon of fresh coriander leaves every morning. Coriander leaves are rich in key nutrients which stimulate the production of saliva. You can chew a few leaves, every time you feel your mouth becoming dry.
Take a glass of water and squeeze the juice of one lemon into it. Add one teaspoon of sugar and a big pinch of salt. Drink lemon juice three or four times daily. The vitamin C found in lemon will boost immunity and also improve the production of saliva. Lemon juice will flush down the residual food particles and will drive away bad breath.
Put one teaspoon of gulkand on a betel leaf, fold it into a small quid and place it in you’re your mouth after every meal. Keep chewing slowly until you finish the whole.
Betel leaf will stimulate the production of saliva and will keep the mouth free from harmful bacteria. Gulkand will freshen up the mouth and sweeten your breath. It will also aid the digestion of food.
A dry mouth deadens the taste buds and the ability to taste sour, sweet, salty and bitter flavors becomes nil. Add cayenne pepper to your cooked dishes to pep up the taste buds and to stimulate the production of saliva. Spicy and pungent foods give a boost to saliva production and also remove the fuzziness from the tongue.
