Itching in the eyes is often accompanied by a burning sensation. Many factors such as allergies, hay fever, dry eyes, bacterial infections, conjunctivitis, irritants in the air like smoke, dust, seasonal pollen and pet dander can cause itchy eyes. Sometimes cosmetics like eyeliner and eye shadow contain harsh chemicals which can also irritate the eyes and cause itchiness. The eyes may become watery and there can be drainage of fluid.
If the discharge is yellowish green then it indicates a bacterial infection and if the eyes are red and there is excessive tearing then it indicates viral infection or conjunctivitis. Itchy eyes can also be caused by overstraining the eyes or by reading for prolonged periods without a break and working for long hours at some fine and skilled tasks which require a lot of concentration. You should avoid commercial eye drops because they tend to make the symptoms worse.
Itching can make you want to rub your eyes again and again which only further aggravates the problem and causes great discomfort. To soothe the burning and itching put a few drops of rose water into your eyes three times daily.
Rose water has antimicrobial properties which will not only flush out all the impurities and pathogens from the eyes but it will also soothe the irritated tissue in the eyelids.

Milk has innumerable curative powers. It is full of valuable nutrients and anti-inflammatory properties that have a cool and healing effect on the eyes. Take some chilled milk and dip a cotton ball into it. Rub the cotton ball around the eyes for three to four minutes.
Then dip two fresh cotton balls into the chilled milk and place them on your eyelids for ten to fifteen minutes. Do this, three or four times and very soon the pain and itching will stop.
Boil a cup of water and steep one teaspoon of green tea into it for fifteen minutes. Strain the tea and cool it. Rinse your eyes with this infusion three or four times daily.
Green tea is full of powerful antioxidant properties which will flush out all the harmful impurities and pathogens from the eyes and will bring tremendous relief in the itching and burning.
Spinach and carrots are extremely rich in nutrients which keep the eyes healthy and the vision strong and clear. Extract the juice of spinach and carrots in a juice extractor and drink two glasses of it twice daily.
