Fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, cough, head and body aches, fever and chills are uncomfortable symptoms of the flu. We would like these symptoms to go away as soon as possible so we look in the drugstore or medicine cabinet for antihistamines, aspirin or acetaminophen. Yes, they can suppress some flu symptoms but it may take you longer to get over the flu. Those miserable symptoms are signs that your body is hard at work fighting the flu virus.
This flu season, instead of using pharmaceuticals like antihistamines, aspirin or acetaminophen to suppress but not cure flu symptoms, learn some ways to cooperate with your immune system to beat the flu. You may not feel better immediately but you may get well sooner.
The symptom of fatigue is telling you your body needs to rest in order to heal. Most healing of flu damaged cells takes place after midnight. If congestion or cough is keeping you awake, use some herbal remedies to get some sleep. One of the best things you can do for yourself when you have the flu is to take a day or two in bed.
Coughing is another way your body is fighting the flu by clearing your airways and making breathing easier. If sore throat from coughing is a problem, make a honey and licorice root cough syrup using a tablespoon each of licorice root, marshmallow root and plantain leaf boiled in two cups of water for ten minutes then steeping for 20 minutes. Strain and add 4 tablespoons honey, 4 ounces of glycerin and 1/8 teaspoon anise essential oil. Take this cough syrup a tablespoon at a time to soothe your cough.
Heat is the most potent weapon against the flu virus so you should stay warm and covered and allow a fever to run its course. Check with your physician if you think a fever is too high or has lasted too long. Otherwise, stay hydrated and let the fever pass on its own.
Head and chest congestion is a result of the immune system producing mucus to both protect from and expel toxic substances like the flu virus. Inhaling steam with essential oil of eucalyptus added (1/4 teaspoon eucalyptus oil to 3 cups of water) can provide relief.
