Use Herbs for Emphysema Symptoms

Share

Emphysema symptoms can be almost unnoticeable at first and over time become more severe.  A cough that just does not go away may be the first sign of emphysema.  Shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and wheezing are common emphysema symptoms.  Loss of appetite and weight loss are less common symptoms.

Emphysema is a chronic condition and the damage to the lungs cannot be repaired.

Manage Emphysema Symptoms

There are many home treatments to help manage emphysema symptoms.  The daily use of a good supplement to ensure proper levels of the B complex vitamins is important if you have been a smoker.  Smoking is the main cause of emphysema.  One effect of smoking is to deplete the levels of B vitamins in the body.

If your circulatory system has been compromised by emphysema symptoms, you can take garlic extract capsules to tone the heart and vascular system.  Take 600 to 1,000 mg. of garlic extract in capsule form each day to reap the medicinal benefits.  Garlic is also antibiotic and antimicrobial and boosts the immune system.  If your emphysema symptoms include frequent colds and upper respiratory infections garlic can be even more powerful when combined with Echinacea tea.

If you have a dry unproductive cough the expectorant action of garlic can be increased by drinking an infusion of mullein, comfrey root and lungwort.  The herbs that are effective to relieve emphysema symptoms are also those that have been traditionally used for bronchitis and asthma.  Some of these herbs are angelica root, grindelia, mouse ear, aniseed and lobelia.  Infusions or teas can be brewed using these herbs, mixing a couple teaspoons of the herbs in boiling water and steeping for 10 to 15 minutes before straining and drinking.

Emphysema symptoms can be lessened by eating a wholesome balanced diet and taking adequate supplements of vitamins C, E and selenium.  Try to exercise each day to maintain lung capacity and strength.  If loss of appetite and weight loss are among your emphysema symptoms, a good diet and regular exercise can be very helpful.  Aim for 30 minutes of exercise five days out of  every week.
