Vitamins To Increase Sperm Count

Share

As far as sperm count and fertility of a man is concerned, both quantity and quality matters. It is the quantity of the sperm that determines the fertility rate of a male. A man will be considered fertile if one millilitre of his semen contains at least 20 million sperm cells.

There are many factors related to the fluctuations in sperm count. However, incorporating few vitamins in your daily diet can increase the numbers. In this post, you will get to know about the four crucial vitamins solely meant for increasing the sperm count.

Top 3 Vitamins To Increase Sperm Count

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most crucial nutrients and one must consume in adequate amount to meet the daily needs. Apart from its antioxidant property, this vitamin is also required to maintain the growth and development of cells and tissues. In order to improve your fertility, you should consume at least 90 mg of vitamin C on a daily basis.

In 2006, a journal about medicinal foods was published where it was clearly stated vitamin C improves the production of sperm in a male body. The study was conducted with few infertile men who were given 1000 mg of vitamin C two times per day for 2 months. At the end of the treatment, the people showed improvement in sperm count, motility and health. Before the treatment, one millilitre of semen contained only 14 million sperms which increased to around 32 million at the end of the second month.

Coenzyme Q10

The production of Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, takes place naturally in a human body. This process of production gradually decreases with age. In 2009, a study was conducted where the effects of the CoQ10 upon the functioning of sperm cells was observed in infertile men.

Some of these infertile men were given 300 mg of Coenzyme Q10 while the others were given placebo supplement. The selection process was random. However, at the end of the study, the CoQ10 supplement led to significant enhancement in the semen density and quality. However, experts believe that this finding requires deeper research and hence it is kept far from formal recommendations.

Zinc and Folate

Zinc is a trace mineral and it is found only in certain food items. Many experts who deal with dietary supplements believe that infertility or decrease in sperm count can be caused by deficiency of zinc. In order to maintain proper synthesis and health of your body cells you need folate which is form of B vitamin. In 2002, a journal was published that showed the masses a positive relationship between sperm production and folate and zinc supplementation in infertile men.

The study was conducted with four groups of infertile men. Three groups were given 5 mg of folic acid, 66 mg of zinc and 5 mg of zinc and folic acid respectively while the other group was given a placebo. 74 percent rise in sperm count was observed in people who received zinc and folic acid combination. In spite of getting such a promising result, the study authors decided to perform more research before generalization.
