Acne is a chronic inflammation of the skin. It is caused by excess sebum, oil that is produced in the sebaceous gland, and dead skin cells building up in the skin pores. The pores then become clogged and inflamed. A red bump, or pimple, forms where the pore is located. When the pimple heals, sometimes a slight hyper-pigmentation will stay in its place. This is referred to as an acne scar. Acne scarring is relatively common and some people are more susceptible to it than others. Sometimes the hyper-pigmentation will go away after a few months. Other times, the acne scar will remain forever.
The best way to prevent acne scarring is to prevent acne altogether. However, if you do get acne and an acne scar appears there are some things that you can to do treat it. First of all you will want to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you go in the sun, you will want to wear sunscreen. If you do not, the acne scar can get worse and even more damage can occur. Tretinoin, which is sometimes prescribed for acne scarring, can help heal the scar. This will only work if it is applied as soon as the scar forms. For scars that are over a year old, tretinoin will not work. One way to avoid acne scarring is to not touch the acne. If you pick at the scab or continuously try to get rid of the pimple using your fingers, it is more likely that an acne scar will form. Vitamin E is also a good treatment to use to get rid of acne scars.
Some people are more prone to acne scarring than others. These people are likely to have severe acne scarring. Unfortunately, the only way to treat severe acne scarring is by having laser acne scar removal or another form of surgery. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a topical cream that could reduce the acne scarring, but it will not get rid of it completely.
Overall, acne scarring will not be an issue if you can stop the acne from forming. Using some form of acne treatment will treat and prevent the acne. If you do experience some acne do not touch it and do not pick at the scabs. Using these prevention tips will keep you from getting acne scars.
