Heat exhaustion occurs most frequently during the warm, hot, humid summer months. Being outdoors for an extended period of time can cause the body to become dehydrated if fluids are not being replenished as well as cause the body to lose too much salt.
Once the body becomes overheated, a person may start to experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, flushed-warm feeling on the skin, dizziness and even fainting. In more serious cases there could be an increase in heart rate, muscle cramps and problems breathing.
If you notice someone exhibiting signs or symptoms of heat exhaustion, the first thing to do is get them out of the heat and indoors where it is air conditioned. If that is not possible, at least have the person move under tree or well shaded area out of direct sun light. The next thing to do is to drink plenty of water and other beverages that replace electrolytes and salt in the body, like Gatorade or Powerade. Apply wet cool towels to the neck, face, arms, and legs or take a cool shower or bath to help cool down the body. Remove any clothing that is uncomfortable, feels tight, or is not needed in order to expose more skin area to allow the skin to breathe.

How to Prevent the Heat from Harming Your Children
The best prevention is to avoid spending an excessive amount of time outdoors when it is extremely hot outside. If you do not have to be outside, then stay indoors where it is air conditioned. If you have to be outside, then wear light colored clothing that is made of materials that breathe and wear a hat to protect the head from direct sun light. You should also wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen to the exposed skin.
Make sure that you have a cooler stocked with water, ice, Gatorade or Powerade to keep you body hydrated. Avoid over-exerting activities especially during the middle of the day when it is the hottest outside. You should avoid beverages that contain caffeine because these will dehydrate the body and move strenuous activities to either in the early morning or later in the evening.
