Blepharitis is caused by an excess growth of bacteria that is usually found on the skin. The eyelids become inflamed especially at the edge, near the eyelash where the hair follicle is located.
Sometimes it is also caused by the blockage of the oil glands in the eyelids and allergies. The eyelids appear red and there is constant itching. Scales form at the base of the eyelashes and as they become rougher the eye becomes irritated. It becomes difficult to open the lids when you wake up in the morning, as they stick together due to the layer of the crust.
Often there is a burning sensation and a gritty feeling in the eye. Whenever you blink your eyes you feel as if sand particles are hurting your eyes. Gradually the moisture producing tissues in the eyes also become inflamed and this causes dry eyes. This common eye disease can be easily cured at home by adopting simple natural methods.
Boric acid has antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties which provide great relief in blepharitis. Boil a cup of water. Let it cool. When the water is still warm, mix one teaspoon of boric acid powder into it. Take a ball of cotton and dip it into the solution.
Dab the cotton ball over the eyelids and bathe them gently with the solution for five minutes. Do not dip the used cotton ball into the solution again. Use a fresh one each time. Repeat this process two or three times daily. The swelling and pain will subside and the scaly crusts will disappear.
Skin a juicy leaf of aloe vera. Remove the gel and place it on the eyelids. Gently rub the eyelid with it, in a circular motion. Do this, for five minutes then wash your eyes with warm water.
The anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties of aloe vera will soon effect quick healing. The itchiness will vanish and the swelling will abate. Apply the gel three times daily for better results.
