The eyes are the most beautiful part of a human being's face. Sparkling eyes enhance the beauty of the person. At the same time, the eyes are important organs and life without vision is something unimaginable. Although it may not be impossible to lead life without it, it serves as a serious impairment in the life of the person. So, those who have been blessed with eyesight have to take enough care of protect this great gift of nature.

Like other organs, the eyes are prone to some ailments. Some of the illnesses which may affect the eyes are cataract, conjunctivitis, glaucoma, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), squint eyes, defective vision etc. Ophthalmologists are of the opinion that many of these ailments are curable with proper medication. At the same time they say that by taking proper care, these can be avoided. Some ailments can be cured even with the use of home remedies.

One such ailment which can be cured by home remedy is defective vision.

Defective vision:

This is one of the most common ailments affecting the eyes. Ophthalmologists are of the opinion that the number of persons suffering from defective vision is on the increase. They say that with proper care and medical medication, defects of vision can be set right. Some of the reasons for defective vision are lack of healthy food or improper food habits, improper blood supply to eyes, excessive reading or watching TV or working on computers for longer duration, reading in moving train, bus etc, mental strain, reading in excessive light, diabetes etc.

Symptoms of defective vision: Excessive watering of eyes, itching in eyes, gradual blurring of vision, mild headache or headache while reading, heaviness in the eyes are some of the common symptoms of defective vision.

Cure:

When any of these symptoms occur, it is advisable to visit the ophthalmologist. At the same time one can take to some of the home remedies which are quite effective in combating the symptoms. Licorice root as a Home Remedy for Defective Vision

Pineapple as a Home Remedy Properties: This is a perennial plant which is closely related to peas or beans, but different from Fennel and Anise. Licorice is believed to be native of Europe and is also largely grown in Asian countries. Licorice is somewhat sweet in taste. This plant has many medicinal qualities - it fights chronic viral hepatitis and develops immunity against viral attacks, reduces serum testosterone, prevents hyperkalemia, is useful in curing duodenal and stomach ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, fights cancer and ileitis.

Using Licorice root as a Treatment for Defective Vision:
Take about ½ teaspoon of Licorice and ¼ teaspoon of pure ghee, and few drops of honey. Mix them well with a cup of milk. Stir the mixture thoroughly and drink. It is advantageous if this drink is taken after supper and before going to bed. Continue to take this medicine for about three months regularly. This will improve the vision.

Almonds as a Home Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties: One of the most well-known products from the Mediterranean, almonds finds their place in most of the kitchens throughout the world. Almonds are known for their most pleasant taste. According to researchers, almonds have many curative qualities and they are one of the most popular ingredients in many of the herbal medicines throughout the world. Almonds are known to increase the LDL, and also the best remedy to fight infection and cancer. They are largely used as a cosmetic and it improves blood circulation.

Using Almonds as a Treatment for Defective Vision:
Take about five almonds and soak them in water overnight. In the morning remove the skin of these almonds and chew them. It improves the vision in due course of time. Do not throw the skin of almonds which you have removed. Make a paste of the skin, mix them with milk and use the paste as a facial. It makes your face look brighter.

Lettuce as a Home Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties:Lettuce belongs to the Asteraceae family and in botanical terms, it is called Latuca sativa. This leafy vegetable is consumed raw or it is cooked before being served. This is a popular vegetable throughout the world. Lecttuce resembles cabbage in appearance but the leaf of lecttuce is delicate compared to that of cabbage. Although it is a low calorie food, it is rich in Vitamin A and folic acid.

Using Lettuce as a Cure for Defective Vision:
Lettuce can be taken raw or it can be cooked as well. If one prefers to take it raw, clean the lettuce cut it into small pieces and add some pepper powder, few drops of fresh lemon juice and salt to taste. If one prefers to cook it, then cut the lettuce into small pieces. Take a pan, add some olive oil and after the oil is hot add some mustard. Now, add lettuce to it and stir it for a while. Add few drops of fresh lemon juice and salt to taste. After about five minutes, remove the lettuce from the pan and serve. Cook it in low or medium flame.

Properties:This perennial plant is believed to be native to Asia and Europe. The shrub grows about two meters. According to botanical classification, blackcurrant belongs to Ribes Berry group and the fruit is dark purple in color (some varieties of blackberry are nearly black in color) with very glossy skin. The fruit is edible and it is used in many culinary preparations. Blackcurrant is rich in Vitamin C and many other unsaturated fatty acids, phosphorus, potassium, Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E, iron and a host of other essential nutrients. The medicinal importance of blackcurrant include preventing cancer, heart diseases, it cures neurological disorders, infections caused by microbes, Alzheimer’s disease etc. and it is rich in Vitamin C making it an ideal treatment for defective vision.

Using Blackcurrant as a Cure for Defective Vision:
Take about three to four blackcurrants every day. Alternatively French Cassis berries can also be used. Naturopaths advise that blackcurrant should be used every day for at least two months so that improvements in vision can be achieved, and that there is no known side effects in continuous use of blackcurrant.


Eyebright as a Home Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties: Also called Euphrasia, this herbaceous plant bears flowers in different colors like violet, purple, blue white etc and some 450 species are known to botanists. The lower portion of the flower is in the shape of lip. The plant is known for its medicinal value. It is considered to be the best remedy by many practitioners of ancient system of medical treatment. These medical practitioners say that eyebright has been in use for treating various ailments since hundreds of years. Eyebright, true to its name apart from improving the vision also cures many ailments or infections of the eyes etc. It is also considered to be the best remedy for hay fever, cough, sinus caused by infection, sore throat etc. Eyebright is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory in character.

Using Eyebright as a Natural Remedy for Defective Vision:
Take some eyebright herbs and dry them in the shade. When fully dry, powder them. Take one teaspoon of powder and boil in two cups of water for about 10 minutes. Allow to cool. Close your eyes and apply this mixture on the eyes. After about 15 minutes, wash your face thoroughly. Repeat this procedure for several weeks. Eye drops made out of eyebright are available in many medical stores. Use the drops made by a reputed manufacturer.

Bilberry as a Home Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties: This is one of the most popular edible berries used world over. The berry normally used belongs to Vaccinium Myrtillus variety. Apart from this, there are other varieties of bilberry like blueberry, whortleberry etc. Like blackcurrant, bilberry is also dark purple in color. In fact, some are so dark in color as to be nearly black. The fruits are round in shape and smaller in size. These berries are often used in jams, and many other desserts. Bilberry is known to improve vision, particularly night vision. That is why during World War II, pilots used to consume bilberry every day. According to experts, it contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which are very helpful for the optic nerves. They remove free radicals from the blood. Experts also say that it shrinks cataract and inhibits macular degeneration of the eyes.

Using Bilberry as a Cure for Defective Vision:
Eat about six to seven bilberries daily. Bilberry extract also is available. It would be advantageous if about ½ teaspoon of bilberry extract is taken twice a day. Ensure that it is prepared by a reputed manufacturer.

Citrus fruits as a Natural Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties: Citrus is a common name used for those flowering plants which belong to ‘rue’ family. The word citrus is believed to have been derived from the Greek word ‘Cedar’ which means ‘sour’. However, Citrus fruits are believed to be of Asian origin. Now, citrus fruits are grown in many parts of the world. Oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, clementines all belong to the citrus family and find a place in most of day to day culinary preparations while being known for their medical importance. Naturopaths suggest that about 10 ml of lemon juice along with 50 ml of lime juice and about 200 ml of orange juice should be mixed and taken as a morning drink every day. If one prefers, add few drops of honey also. They say that with continued usage, this medicine will gradually improve the vision.

Jasmine as a Natural Remedy for Defective Vision

Properties:This flowering plant which belongs to olive family has many varieties and is largely grown for its fragrance and spectacular color. Many people grow jasmine in their garden. In Asia and particularly in India, jasmine is used for daily prayer and worship. Jasmine literally mean ‘gift of God’. Jasmine is used in the preparation of perfumes, tea and many cosmetic products. Jasmine essential oil and syrup are now available in many medical stores. Jasmine has many medical uses in treating jaundice, venereal diseases, ulcers, vesicles boils, diseases connected with skin, eye, and breast tumors and in calming and relaxing.

Using Jasmine as a Cure for Defective Vision:
Take few jasmines and soak them in distilled water overnight. The next morning use this water as eye drops. This will also cure many other ailments of eyes like conjunctivitis and inflammation or allergies and irritation of the eyes apart from improving the vision.

Other Natural remedies for treatment of Defective Vision:

Eye exercises and neck exercises are the best home remedies for defective vision.

Another simple method is sun gazing. Sit in an open space and now close your eyes and turn your face towards the sun for about 10 minutes. While doing so, shake your head several times. Now, slowly open your eyes and look at the sun and blink your eyes about ten times. Now, keep looking at the landscape around you for about 10 minutes. Repeat this exercise three to four times every day. This method is known to improve the vision. Ensure you do this exercise either in the morning or evening but not during afternoons when sun’s rays are very sharp.

Close your eyes and splash fresh water on the eyelids. Wash the face well with a clean towel.

Aloe Vera eye drops, or Calendula eye wash or applying few drops of fresh breast milk or castor oil apart from improving vision will also cure pink eye.

Place cotton pads dipped in rose water on the eye lids for about half an hour. This is very helpful for those who strain their eyes by working for long duration. This will also improve the vision.

There are some simple exercises like rubbing both the palms and placing them on the eyelids. This gives lot of relief to strained eye and it is a very simple procedure to improve vision. Repeat this exercise several times.

Another exercise is to focus on a distant object for about 30 seconds without blinking. Now, blink rapidly for about 10 to 15 minutes and do the similar exercise on a nearby object. Repeat this exercise about five to six times every day.

While reading, keep the book at a safe distance so that it does not strain your eyes. Similarly, if you are working on computer for longer duration, after every half an hour or whenever you feel strained in the eye, stop looking at the computer and sit relaxed with closed eyes for about a minute. This reduces the strain on the eyes.

If you have inflammation of eyes, keep used tea bags (not soaked in milk) on the closed eye lids for about 20 minutes. This will improve the vision.

Diet for Defective Vision:

Drink carrot juice as much as possible because carrot is found to be very useful in improving the eyesight. Alternatively, make a mixture of 200 ml of carrot juice, 150 ml of celery juice, 75 ml of endives juice and 75 ml of parsley juice. To this mixture add about ½ liter of chicory juice. Take this juice every day which helps to improve the vision. You can also add few drops of honey.

Take salads of fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin A as diet for defective vision. This apart from improving the vision will also help to cure cataract. For better results, garnish the salad with honey and few drops of fresh lemon juice.

Use garlic in your daily cooking. This will prevent cataract and will also improve the vision.

Take orange juice regularly because according to ophthalmologists Vitamin C is absolutely essential for improving the eye sight.

Take as much dal and sprouts as possible as diet for defective vision because they are rich in Vitamin C.

Avoid bread, jam, meat, smoking so as to improve the vision.
