Pre-menopause occurs when the production of reproductive hormones reduces in a woman’s body. A period of 10 to 15 years before actual menopause is known as pre-menopause stage.
Various symptoms may be experienced by a woman including sporadic periods, hot flashes, loss of concentration, insomnia, night sweats, migraine headaches, heart palpitations, mood swings and reduced hair production on under arms and legs.
Alternative approaches are considered as the safest pre-menopause treatment as they involve little or no risk at all. In this approach, Acupuncture and Herbal Remedies are the well known treatments available.
Acupuncture is a Chinese medical treatment that involves the insertion of fine sterile needles into the body at particular points following “energy pathways”. This is an excellent treatment, but expensive and complicated to follow. So the less complicated treatment available is herbal treatment.
There are two types of herbs available to balance the hormonal levels – phytoestrogen and non-estrogenic herbs. Black Cohosh and Dong Quai are phytoestrogen herbs that contain estrogenic components produced by the plants. These herbs are used to treat low hormone levels.
Some studies have shown that consumption of pills made from black cohosh extract helps to provide short term relief from menopause symptoms including mood swings, depression, hot flashes and anxiety. But its usage has not been recommended in the long term due to some side effects involved.
Non-estrogenic herbs do not contain any estrogen. These herbs nourish the hormonal glands and aid the body in producing its own natural hormones. Macafem stimulates a woman’s own hormone production and therefore, considered the safest way for pre-menopause treatment. Maca root is considered very beneficial in reducing pre-menopause symptoms.
Another approach to pre-menopause treatment is to treat each symptom individually. There are a range of natural treatments available that focus on treating each of the pre-menopause symptoms and aim in alleviating them.
Foods made from soy extracts and soybeans are considered richest source of phytoestrogens. Soy cheese, tofu and meat substitute products like breads and muffins made from soy flour, soy burgers and soy drinks or soy milk are rich sources of soy.
According to some studies, consumption of soy breads made from soy flour or soy beverages twice a day can effectively diminish the number of hot flashes. Pills and powder made from soy is considered to have higher levels of phytoestrogens.
Apart from these, soy products have wide range of other health benefits including ability to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancer.
A good idea to the treatment is to switch to a healthy diet. Include plenty of raw vegetables and fruits to your diet. It will stabilize the blood sugar levels and in turn will produce less mood swings, better sleep and increased concentration.
Also consume dark leafy vegetables and legumes. These foods are high in phytoestrogen and treat hot flashes, reduce hair loss and increase the libido.
Avoid red meat and dairy products completely as they increase hot flashes. Also cut on alcohol, spicy foods, sugar and caffeine. These products increase acidity in blood which leads to release of calcium from the bones.
With the starting of pre-menopause, every woman should add weight-bearing exercise to their life style habits. Light hand weights, yoga and walking slow down calcium loss and improve bones resistance. Avoid stress to reduce irritability and promote sleep.
