8 Best Knee Pain Treatment Options

Share

Numerous factors are associated with knee pain. Injury to the knee is a common cause of acute knee pain. Persistent injury to the knee or wear and tear of the cartilages induces degenerative arthritis, a common cause of severe knee pain. Chronic knee pain is often attributed to inflammatory arthritis associated with an autoimmune disorder of the joints. Occasionally, knee pain is a symptom of an infection or bone tumor.

Pain relief drugs are used as the primary treatment for knee pain. However, mild to moderate knee pain responds to drug-free treatments. Natural treatments can easily alleviate acute knee pain.

Options For Knee Pain Treatment

Natural Treatment

Applying ice to the painful knee is an effective natural remedy for treating acute knee pain. It reduces swelling and numbs the sensation of pain by cooling the area. Ice wrapped in a cloth or cold pack can be applied for up to 20 minutes, at least thrice a day.Alternating heat treatment with the cold therapy is also beneficial for the painful joint. Applying moist heat to the affected knee improves circulation and flexibility. Resting the knee for a day or two and applying ice pack are usually sufficient for treating knee pain caused by a minor injury.

Wrapping the painful knee joint with appropriate lightweight compression bandage reduces swelling by inhibiting fluid buildup in the injured knee tissues. Elevating the knee by placing it on a pillow while lying down or sitting on a recliner reduces pain and inflammation by draining the fluid that had accumulated in the injured knee.

Pain Relief Medications

Along with home care, to attenuate knee pain, most people rely on pain relief medications. Acetaminophen or paracetamol is considered the safest medication for treating knee pain. Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen can provide fast relief from knee pain. However, NSAIDs should not be used within 24 hours after injuring the knee.

Corticosteroid Injection

Chronic knee pain due to arthritis that cannot be effectively treated with pain relief drugs can be alleviated with corticosteroid injections. The effect of a corticosteroid injection usually last for a few months.

Supplements

Certain supplements are considered beneficial for treating chronic knee pain triggered by cartilage degeneration or inflammatory disorders. Glucosamine and chondroitin are two popular supplements for treating osteoarthritis knee pain. These substances occur naturally in the cartilages.Ingesting these supplements promotes regeneration of cartilages. Knee pain induced by inflammatory arthritis can be treated with supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids. The anti-inflammatory effect of these essential fats can reduce chronic inflammation and pain.

Fish oil is the finest source of omega-3 fats. A type of omega-6 fat called gamma linolenic acid is also recommended for treating chronic knee pain in people suffering from inflammatory arthritis.By obstructing the activities of inflammatory immune substances, gamma linolenic acid reduces inflammation and pain of the joints. Bromelain, an enzyme extracted from pineapple, is another effective anti-inflammatory agent for treating knee pain.
