How To Treat Angina with Vitamins

Share

Studies have found a close association between low plasma levels of vitamins A, C and E and the risk of angina. Researchers believe that the antioxidant effect of these vitamins play an important role in preserving the health of the heart and the coronary arteries and reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.

Angina is discomfort or pain in the chest that occurs when the heart muscles do not get sufficient blood to maintain its pumping function. An underlying coronary artery disease is primarily associated with angina.

How to Treat Angina With Vitamins

Beta-carotene or vitamin A

Risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and angina can be thwarted by boosting intake of vitamin A or its carotenoid form beta-carotene. Increase in beta-carotene reserve in the body causes mild to up to 50 percent reduction in the risk of coronary artery diseases. According to studies, smokers are especially susceptible to vitamin A deficiency.

Beta-carotene is especially effective in protecting smokers from angina and cardiovascular diseases. As recent researchers suggest a possible link between inflammatory response of the body and higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, the anti-inflammatory property of beta-carotene may help to reduce angina by inhibiting the activities of pro-inflammatory mediators.

Richest dietary sources of vitamin A include carrots, sweet potato, spinach, leafy green vegetables and milk, dairy and beverages fortified with vitamin A.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is good for the heart health. People vulnerable to angina can avoid the discomfort and pain in the chest by consuming sufficient amount of vitamin C rich foods daily. While current recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C is 75 to 90 mg per day, recent researches suggest increasing the daily vitamin C intake to 200 mg per day for maintaining optimum health condition.

A number of studies have found a strong association between increased vitamin C consumption and reduced risk of heart diseases. Vitamin C reduces mortality risk from cardiovascular disease. It also helps to reduce the blood pressure level, a prominent cause of heart diseases.

A diet containing at least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables can easily meet your daily vitamin C requirement, essential for alleviating angina. Common dietary sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits such as lime, lemon, grapefruit and orange, berries, pineapple, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, watermelon, papaya, tomato, peppers, leafy green vegetables, cauliflower and broccoli.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a powerful natural antioxidant. By delaying progression of coronary artery disease, it can alleviate angina, a common symptom of heart diseases. The antioxidant effect of vitamin E prevents oxidation of the low-density lipoproteins circulating in the blood vessels, thereby preventing lipids from hardening to form plaques that clog the coronary artery.

Moreover, it protects the coronary arteries and the heart muscles from the damaging activities of the free radicals, a feature that can reduce the risk of heart diseases and angina that occur following exposure to tobacco smoke and air pollution.

Vitamin E deficiency can be prevented by taking about 15 mg of the vitamin daily through food. Seeds, nuts, whole grains and vegetable oils are the richest sources of vitamin E.
