Ulcerative Colitis mainly affects a person’s large intestine and rectum. Inflammation of the large intestine takes place which swells up the intestine and results in sores, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, diarrhea and flow of whitish mucus.

Ulcerative Colitis usually affects people within the age group of 15 to 30 years. The exact cause of the disease is yet unknown, but heredity, vulnerability of the immune system; age and gender are some of the main factors which may lead to Ulcerative Colitis. The common symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, dehydration, fever, painful bowel movements, blood clots, anemia, skin disorders, vision problems, joint pain, fatigue, constipation, and loss of appetite, mucus discharge from rectum, kidney problems, neck pain, fever, tiredness and weakness.

Persistent Diarrhea

You will notice that in this form of Ulcerative Colitis, rectal bleeding can be the most common symptom. Inflammation of the rectum along with rectal pain and an urgent feeling can be some of the other symptoms as well. Ulcerative Proctitis is the mildest form of Ulcerative Colitis.

Symptoms Of Left-sided Colitis

In this form of Ulcerative colitis, inflammation of the rectum extending to the sigmoid colon, which is situated on the abdomen’s upper left side, takes place.

Symptoms of this problem include diarrhea with blood, sudden loss of weight, and abdominal cramps and pain.

Symptoms Of Proctosigmoiditis

Proctosigmoiditis affects and causes inflammation of the rectum and the sigmoid colon which is the colon’s lower end. Bloody diarrhea, rectum bleeding, pain in the abdominal region, tenesmus and urgency are some of the symptoms associated with Proctosigmoiditis.

Symptoms Of Fulminant Colitis

Fulminant colitis is the most brutal form of Ulcerative colitis. This colitis can prove to be life threatening and the whole colon is affected. The symptoms include severe dehydration, abdominal pain, bleeding diarrhea along with shock. These types of colitis may lead to toxic megacolon or colon rupture.
