Prickly heat or heat rash is a common ailment during summer. In this condition some areas of the skin itch immensely, sometime the itching is more like pricking. It usually happens on the neck, stomach, back and armpits. The main cause of it is excessive sweating on the affected parts of the body.
This causes the blocking of the sweat glands, which result in the small bumps that we see over the affected area. Though it usually goes off in some days, the duration it remains sometime gets uncontrollable. There are some herbal remedies listed below which will help control it.
Herbal Remedies For Prickly Heat
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera can be safely used in treating prickly heat. Take a leaf of an Aloe Vera plant and extract the gel from it. You can also use the Aloe Vera gel available in the market.
The gel should be spread over the affected area, gently and slowly. Aloe Vera can be consumed orally too to treat this condition.
Homemade Herbal Powder
Take ½ a cup each of lavender, mint and rosemary powder, mix it well and put it in a glass jar. Use this powder as an when you feel like, but most importantly apply it over the affected area after your bath. The cooling properties of all these herbs will heal the prickly heat and relieve of the itchiness.
Margosa (Neem) Leaves
Neem leaves treat many skin disorders and one of them being heat rash or prickly heat. Take some fresh Neem leaves and grind it making a paste out of it. Apply this paste to the area of rash, keep it there for some time and then wash it.
Do this two to three times a day. The anti bacterial and antiseptic properties of the neem helps to control the irritation and the itchiness caused due to the prickly heat.
Mint Cubes
Mint is known for its cooling properties and is a very good herbal remedy for prickly heat. Take some fresh mint leaves or dried ones, whichever is available. Put it in water and boil it for some time. Then strain this and cool it for some time. Now pour this cooled water into ice cube moulds and freeze it. These ice cubes can be rubbed gently on the affected area atleast three times a day to relieve the itchiness.
Coriander
This is another herb which is effective in the condition of prickly heat. Take two table spoons of coriander powder and the same measure of sandalwood powder. Now add some rose water to this mixture and mix it well.
Apply this herbal mixture to the prickly heat affected area and let it dry. After it is dry, wash the area with cold water. Apply this mixture at least twice a day.
Banyan Tree Bark
This is another herbal remedy which is very effective in healing the prickly heat. Take some dried pieces of the banyan tree bark and powder it. Apply it to the affected part and get an instant relief from the itchiness. Continuous use will take away the prickly heat completely.
