What Causes a Heart Attack?

There is no cure for a heart attack. However there are several things you can do to lower you risk and prevent even having one. If your family history includes such things are heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, your risk factor for having a heart attack is greater. If you are overweight or obese you risk factor is also greater.

High cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease are all inter-related. High cholesterol causes high blood pressure and as a result these two combined lead to heart disease. If left untreated all three of these ailments will lead to a heart attack at some point during your life.

High cholesterol levels in the body are the result of consuming foods that are high in trans fats and saturated fats. This bad (LDL) cholesterol is unable to be removed from the body by the good (HDL) cholesterol because there is such an excessive amount in the blood stream. This excess bad cholesterol then attaches to the walls of the blood vessels and begins to harden. This causes the diameter of the blood vessel to shrink. An example would be to take a straw and slowly start to pinch it off while sipping a drink through it. You have to suck on the straw harder in order to move the liquid up the straw and into your mouth.

As a result of this restriction in the blood vessels the heart now has to beat faster and harder in order to pump the blood through the body. This increases your blood pressure and results in hypertension. As more and more deposits of cholesterol continue to grow, eventually it will lead to heart disease as the heart muscle is now working so hard to pump blood through the circulatory system. The heart is now becoming strained and your blood pressure goes up even higher.

At this point you are on a collision course with a heart attack. The bad cholesterol can continue to calcify until the blood vessel is completely blocked. Or the buildup breaks free from the blood vessel wall and gets stuck. When the blood vessel becomes block you have a heart attack.
