Many people suffer throughout their lives with one or more forms of hives. Hives are painful, unsightly, itchy and often quite swollen. A good number of people who have chronic hives also deal with extreme muscle soreness the day after a hives attack, which can affect their ability to work or get on with daily life. A lot of people who suffer from hives cannot afford to seek hives treatments from their doctor every time they have an attack. Fortunately, there are several effective hives treatments that can be tried at home for very little money.
There are topical treatments, which mean things applied to the skin, and hives treatments that are ingested. You can try some or all and it’s perfectly fine to combine them. It would be best, though, to try them one at a time, at first. This way, you can track what works for you.
Hives Treatments Applied to the Skin
There are many at-home hives treatments, probably because there are so many types and causes of hives. Some of these may be more effective on one or the other, so keep trying until you find something that works for you.
Oats: Many people find their itching relieved by soaking in an oat bath. Use quick, not instant oats. Place dry in a pillowcase or other thin fabric, seal with a rubber band, and let it sit in a warm (not hot-heat aggravates hives symptoms) bath for ten minutes. Then soak yourself in the hot bath as long as you like. You can also do this in a pan or bowl of hot water if you just want to soak your hands or feet.
Ginger bath: Some of the properties of ginger have been shown to ease the itchiness and possibly slow histamine production. To prepare this treatment, cut 1/4lb (about one large knob) peeled ginger into chunks and add to a gallon of boiling water. Let this steep like a tea, and then add to your bath water.
Hives Treatments to Eat or Drink
A cup of green tea drunk twice per day may calm the nervous system and prevent stress-related hives.
Turmeric added to foods is a simple way to lessen hives attacks. Turmeric stimulates the body’s defense against histamine.
