What Are External Hemorrhoids?

External hemorrhoids are the most common type of hemorrhoids people get. Anyone can get external hemorrhoids regardless of age, however, they are more commonly found in people that have a poor diet and difficulty in passing bowel movements.

External hemorrhoids occur when you strain too much when trying to make a bowel movement. Blood vessels under the skin break causing swelling and the hemorrhoids to form around the anus opening.  Hemorrhoids can cause soreness, be painful, and in certain cases break open and bleed. They can even itch. This can cause great discomfort when having to sit in once location for an extended period of time. In extreme cases where the external hemorrhoids will not heal, they must be surgically removed.

If you find that you have external hemorrhoids you can do several things to help alleviate the pain until they heal. You should wear loose fitting clothing as to not put additional pressure on the area. When sitting for an extended period of time, you can use a pillow to provide extra cushioning support.

There are several topical creams that can be applied directly to the external hemorrhoids. However, if your hemorrhoids have broken open and bled, you should apply a small amount of the topical cream to one first to make sure it will not burn or cause further irritation.

Soaking in a bathtub with hot water can help bring relief and reduce swelling. You can even add a handful of oatmeal and Epson salts to the hot water to provide further relief. The oatmeal will work to not only reduce swelling but causes the external hemorrhoids to shrink.

Once you have a case of external hemorrhoids you increase your likelihood of a reoccurrence later. In order to prevent a reoccurrence you should make sure your diet consists of foods that are high in fiber. Fiber helps the digestion tract break down food and make it easier to pass bowel movements. Oats, bran, wheat and other grains are good sources of fiber. If you have a gluten allergy, you can consume brown rice, apples, pears, peas, or beans instead.
