If you get frequent outbreaks of hives from allergies or stress, you can use several herbal remedies. These herbal remedies will help eliminate itchy skin while bringing down swelling of the affected area as a result of the hives.
Herbal Teas
Many herbal teas contain anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties. You can make the hot tea and sip on it. Or you can take the herbal tea bags and soak them in water and apply to affected areas. If your tongue is swollen from hives, you can place a few tea bags in-between your cheeks and gums to help reduce swelling. You can even use bandages to secure the tea bags to infected areas. You should leave the tea bags on for at least fifteen minutes for best results. You can repeat this process as much as needed to bring relief.
Peppermint and Spearmint
Both of these herbs contain menthol, which can relieve itching. You can use pure oils or extracts or fresh leaves. When using the pure oil or extract, use cotton balls and dab the oil on the infected skin. Do not cover the skin but let it air dry. If you are using fresh leaves, grind these up and add a little bit of cornstarch and a few drops of water to make a paste. Apply this mixture to the area affected with hives and let dry completely before washing off.
Epson Salts
Epson salts work to relieve pain, muscle aches, as well as itching. Add a few cups of Epson salts to warm bath water and mix well. Soak in the bathtub for about twenty minutes. You can even add a few handfuls of oatmeal if you like.
Calamine Lotions
Calamine lotions can help dry up hives as well as relieve itching caused by them. Using a cotton ball, you can dab calamine lotion onto the affected areas. It is best to allow the lotion to air dry before washing off for the best results. You can use any one of these methods or a combination to help relieve your hives.
