The heart wrenching scene of your little one coughing with watery eyes and having difficulty falling asleep with you staring helplessly can any mother in a depression. There are a lot of over the counter medicines which are not very effective against cold.
On top of this, most of the parents are hesitant in giving strong medicines to the toddler which is understandable. However, you can always try some herbal remedies that provide relief to the child and are unlikely to have any side effects.
Herbal Remedies For Toddler Cold
Ginger Zinger
Before you just give me the “Are you crazy look”, let me assure you the pungency of ginger will not hurt your child with the preparation that is being suggested. There are two way of using ginger to help with cold. Crush some ginger with 2-3 teaspoons of water.
Now add the juices thus extracted in a teaspoon of honey. Give it to your child thrice in a day especially before sleeping. You can also boil this herb in the water, add some cardamom powder and sugar. Give half a bowl of this warm solution to your child twice a day.
Peppermint stint
Peppermint contains Menthol. Menthol is used in many ointments and cold relieving applications. Instead of using them, just keep some menthol oil handy at home. Add a few drops in steaming water and keep this water in the room where your toddler sleeps. If you have a vaporiser, then you can add menthol in it. It will clear the clogged nose and air tract for light breathing.
Breath easy with Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus, like menthol is an ingredient that is known to clear the nasal tract during cold. Keep some dried eucalyptus wrapped in a piece of cloth. Place it near the pillow or in the cot of the toddler.
This will help the child in breathing easy. You can also add eucalyptus oil in the steaming water for the same purpose. For better results just take one drop of eucalyptus oil and apply on the chest to relieve congestion.

Basil punch
Basil tea is considered helpful in relieving the symptoms of cold. You can prepare basil tea by boiling a bunch of basil leaves in water. Also add some ginger and cinnamon to it. Cool it to warm levels and give to your child.
If the child is not averse to the taste of basil then let him chew the leaves with few grains of sugar for immediate relief. You can also extract a spoonful of basil water by crushing basil leaves with a teaspoon of water. Give this thrice a day for relief.
Thyme
Thyme is known to help clearing the cough faster. It has properties that push the mucous out of the system thereby providing relief from congestion. Prepare tea out of thyme leaves. Boil for 5 minutes so that all the goodness is juiced out and one fourth of water evaporates. Give it warm to your child.
If you notice increase in runny nose then it would mean thyme has worked on the cold. Try these remedies just about the time cold sets in. If you find no improvement or worsening of symptoms, check with the doctor immediately. If the condition improves then continue the same herbal remedy and see your little bunch of joy go pink with happiness and joy!
