Fever blisters are painful sores caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 which remains dormant in the body and later gets active to cause infection. The blisters usually form small clusters within the mouth, on the lip, on the chin and near the nose. Emotional stress, long term exposure to strong sunlight, trauma, illness and a weak immune system can also lead to an outbreak of fever blisters. They can appear on the genitals, inside the eyes and the on the skin of the fingers.
The first symptoms are fever, headache, nausea and vomiting. Later, painful sores erupt in the mouth and on the border of the lip. There is a tingling and burning sensation and intense itching. The skin becomes red and inflamed. The blisters crust over after some time and the crust is shed when the sores begin to heal. This disease is highly contagious and is easily spread either by direct contact with the infected person or his/her saliva or by drinking from the same cup or glass.
